VTEC swapped with DOHC...issues....
Guys gals and Mods. Great forum and thank you for allowing me to post.
I told my friggin son to stay away from these cars. Not because they are bad, I happen to love Honda. Only because they can and have been tinkered with so much, it's hard to know what you are getting.
The story goes like this:
I bought him a 2000 Civic EX several months ago. The car looked good and ran fine.
I honestly believe the engine was replaced with the regular DOHC engine.
3 reasons standout in my mind:
The car will not go above 5500 RPM without hiccupping, bogging down.
I took it to my Honda Mechanic and he says it was replaced. He showed me 2 plugs with no apparent destination in the harness he says should be going to the ETEC.
There is no label that says VTEC anywhere on the engine as I have seen on others.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
Also, the check engine bulb was removed by whomever made the swap.
Even though the car runs fine, I am concerned for example, he needs to pass someone suddenly and cannot.
I have taken the liberty of pasting the CPU info in the hopes that perhaps I can simply buy a CPU for a non VTEC car.
A rather large 6E

Thanks for any help given.

That car comes with a D16Y8 which is SOHC
What do you mean "the regular DOHC engine?
Im pretty sure all DOHC D series and B series have more power than the stock motor.
and what is this ETEC your mechanic speaks of?

That is the stock ECU for that car
Don't think I can post pics during my trial period, although I can email to anyone willing to take a look.
Thanks again.

D16Y7 is the engine number.
My mechanic says it should have a VTEC
I assumed it was a DOHC.
My apologies for not being clear.
In any event, the car runs fine, but cannot go over 5500 RPM with the aforementioned bogging down, or hiccupping. The check engine light has been disabled and I posted the ECU in hopes that would shed some light on the issue.
Darn kid!

That might have to do with the fact that you are running a VTEC ECU and your motor is non-VTEC. So above VTEC crossover on the ECU, around 5500, extra fuel is injected and it is running rich.
Try to find the stock ECU for that motor. P2E I believe

What can be the cause of the hiccupping or hesitation I described if this is the correct engine?

good place to start! for the boggin or hiccuping or what ever.

to the OP since your trial you cant post more then 5 a day. but you can always go back and edit a previous post if you try something and it still isnt working. juuust so you know :-)
hrmm.. its an ex model it should come with vtec.. but since you said its a d16y7 that only means that someone must have swapped out the old motor and replaced it with a crappier motor... try bringing the car to autozone and borrow their o2 scanner and plug that into the port right where the incar fuses are under the steering wheel.. tell us the codes ur getting..
hrmm I went to get my ecu from my old d16y7 and it reads almost the same as yours..
37820-P2E-L02
901-202300.. if anyone knows this should be the correct ecu for the d16y7??.. P2E

also if ur using a vtec ecu it might be searching for a knocksensor wire, the vtec solenoid wire and so on.. usually your car will feel like crap if ur knocksensor wire isnt plugged into the ecu.. and if its a d16y7 it will not have a knocksensor wire but if u have a vtec ecu it will be looking for that...

The OP has a P2P which is for a D16Y8</TD></TR></TABLE>
oh yeah.. so he is using a d16y8 ecu for that motor wit no vtec.. if thats the case then it must be the knock sensor wire thats messing his car up.. since the d16y7 doesnt have a knocksensor on the block, the ecu he has is looking for it because the d16y8 has it.. I remeber when my knocksensor wire wasnt plugged in while doing a swap and it drove like ****.. no matter how hard I pressed on the gas it wouldnt go any faster.. what he needs to do now is get the correct ecu P2E

Also the P2P uses 240CC injectors and the P2E uses 190CC injectors
y7 = 190cc
y8 = 240cc
So this also will help to the bogging, prolly running VERY rich killing the cat fast ( this is what happen to me )

When I say bogging, I mean, when it gets to 5200 RPM or so it hesitates and jumps, almost as if the fuel were being cut off. Someone mentioned something about a "safe mode" to prevent the engine from blowing up.
Do you guys have any idea where I can pick up the ECU? Are they year and model specific?
Do I need a harness as well or is it just a simple exchange?
Thanks for your help.

its easy.. a simple ecu change.. find one that says P2E in the middle.. heres an example of mines..
37820-P2E-L02
I dont think that even safe mode would make ur car bog like that.. Im telling you its the knock sensor.. only vtec engines have a knock sensor.. without it your car will not allow you to rev up quickly and u end up pressing hard on the gas.. but since you have a vtec ecu, the computer is looking for a knock sensor wire and ur d16y7 non vtec does not have it, thus throwing a code.. hope this helps

Cool. I just found one on ebay for 49.00. Hope it solves the issues.
After I get the ecu, I will replace the check engine light and check for any other issues.
Thanks again and I will keep you guys posted.

Another thing that MIGHT come into play to add to your problem.
The ECU from 96 - 98 are different then the 99 - 00.
96 - 98 is OBD2A
99 - 00 is OBD2B --- urs is a 2000 so its this one
So when you do order or ECU keep that in mind to be sure u get the one u need.
But another thing, the IACV (Idle Air Control Valves) on the d16y7 wireing is different then the EX wireharness your car has im sure that is adding to your bogging. I be leave the EX is wired for the 2 wire IACV and the d16y7 engine is a 3 wire IACV. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
