I have a friend who recently acquired a DA1. 87' RS Hatchback

He cannot go into gear when the car is on, but he can shift into gears when it's off and then turn it on and he's in gear.

I'm pretty sure we just need to replace the clutch, but i am consulting all that is Holy H-T before we go ahead with this.

yeah the clutch is bad, it happened to me when i had my flip light. the spring came out of the clutch disc and lodged itself between the clutch and pressure plate. just replace it and you should be fine.
