My sisters car has been sputtering for along time and I'm looking for some ideas about what it could be and some advice before we start putting money into fixing it.

The car acts fine at first but after driving for a while it sputters and hesitates to go faster but then when it gets in the upper RPMs it stops sputtering and accelerates better.
Also she has an automatic transmission and its never seemed to shift like it should.When it shifts it sometimes accelerates normal and then it all of a sudden revs fast to around 4000 rpm and then shifts...I was thinking it might be Vtec kicking in but it dosnt always do it so I don't think it is.Also if you slow down and then try to accelerate(like on a corner) when you press the pedal it hesitates to accelerate...like it doesn't down shift or something.

I think for the sputtering problem it could be the distributor,fuel pump or intake manifold but im not sure.

Anyone have any ideas?
