Default Pinging

Ok, I'm now positive that my car pings. I'm begining to think the guy didn't time the car right. Right now I have the ignition fully retarded (per turning the distributor) and i still ping a bit even when running 93 octane. I was wondering if he didn't have the cam set in the right place when he put the belt on. Is it possible to take the belt off and turn the cam gear to retard the timing a little more and put the belt back on without any serious problems? I'm without a timing light at the moment, but it's high on my "to buy" list as of right now.

Also, if it is possible, how would I go about taking the belt off? Is there a tensioner for it?

P.S. I have a D15 1.5L with PM3-12 head

you can actually unbolt the timing gear and then slip it off.. thus the belt should be free..but that would mean - put the gear back on and slowly spin it 1 tooth and then slip the belt back on..blah, blah, blah...

Ok, I pulled the belt off and turned the cam. I had to turn it 3 teeth before she stopped pinging, now she's running good, no spray paint can rattle no more. I did it the hard way, I slid the belt off the gear and then slipped it back on (a lot harder then it sounds), but for now mission accomplished.

Hey , I have the same problem - don't want to get into it but my belt must have jumped one tooth. I thought I could take the belt off and realine it myself but I don't have an impact wrench for the crank ( never been taken off ) . Is it really possible to slide the belt off and back on ? I have a B18c1 so theres two off em

try loosening the tensioner, and play with it, and a good 3 foot pole and a strong arm (tool, like rachet but doesn't rachet), that took mine off. It was a pain though. now i have a 500 ft/lb beast just for that, wee
