GARDEN GROVE – An accident Saturday night claimed the life of a Garden Grove man after he was thrown from his 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle while wearing a novelty helmet, Garden Grove police officials said.
Witnesses told police that the motorcycle of Daniel Allen Dunn, 58, was stopped at a red light on Katella Avenue. Dunn proceeded across Katella when the light turned green, and hit the north end of the raised concrete center median on the south side of the intersection, police said.
The median separates the northbound and southbound lanes of Euclid Street south of Katella.
Dunn was thrown to the ground and struck his head. He was wearing a helmet that was not approved by the Department of Transportation, police said. Police responded to the scene at 8:49 p.m.
He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died from his injuries, officials said.
Police said it does not appear alcohol, speed or another vehicle contributed to the accident.
Unlike Department of Transportation-approved helmets that have been tested for impact, novelty helmets have not been tested, said Garden Grove police Sgt. Bob Bogue.
Despite that, some motorcyclists opt for the novelty brands because they are the lighter, thinner and more comfortable option, Bogue said.
The novelty brands are often sold alongside the approved brands, which have a Department of Transportation sticker on the back of the helmet, Bogue said. Novelty helmets look similar but are not as well padded and do not have the sticker.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact the police department at 714-741-5823 or 741-5704.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I know how popular those thin skull caps are for cruiser guys but its like if you're riding without a helmet. Don't get that false sense of security man.

I don't like to warn people about helmets. If you're not smart enough to find the safest choice for your head, then darwin will make a selection for you.

I agree. Probably only helped if you landed straight up and down on your head but then you would have a broke neck so it doesn't really matter. Pretty much all they are good for is deflecting a rock of the top of the noggin. lol I wouldn't bother wearing one if it was between that and nothing.

i doubt the half face helmets are THAT bad, theyre mainly made i think for when you go down on your side, shoulder first.
but for me, its full face or no face... literally.
