Cable tranny will not release the clutch
FIXED - got sold a bad pressure p[late by honda
Hello-
I am having a problem that has been bugging me for 3 weekends in a row now, each one leading to taking the tranny off to try new options. The clutch disc does not release from the motor, so you can never take it in/out of gear.
What I have:
I have a 91 Integra transmission... mated to a 94 Integra motor. Here are some of the details below:
NEW parts:
91 Integra clutch cable
91 tranny
91 pressure plate from Honda
91 clutch disc from aftermarket dealer
new throwout bearing
new throwout bearing fork + spring + bolt
new shift fork that connects the cable to the throwout bearing
94 flywheel
We have tried a 93 pressure plate, and it looks identical to the 91 pressure plate... the 91 has more teeth, but all the dimensions are the same
the troubleshooting results
The car will indeed jump forward or backwards if you try to start it in gear. The car will also jump forward if you start it in gear, with the clutch in.
If you try to put it in reverse with the car on and clutch in, it grinds. If you try to put it in 1st, it doesn't grind but you obviously can't get it into first.
The shift lever on the transmission pulls up to the fullest extent - with the clutch pedal all the way in the lever hits the transmission.
The lever is hard to pull, you need to pull real hard with one hand, but only the last ~1" of travel. The other 3-4 inches its easy to pull. Inside the car, the clutch pedal has a nice stiff feel. As mentioned, the throwout bearing comes to the spline'd part of the tranny shaft.
my only idea
The supposedly NEW pressure plate from honda came in a box labeled 'damaged' with someone else's receipt in there. We already had the tranny off, so we figured we would try it anyways (this has been going on for weeks now, so we are good at getting it on/off).
I noticed that with the pressure plate tightened, some of the teeth stick out more than others... maybe 0.05" - 0.075". Only three or so fingers were like this.
Would these three rogue bastards cause the PP to touch the clutch disc still, and never disengage???
Anyways, any advice would be appreciated... we're trying to avoid buying a new transmission, we think this one is good.
Thanks-
Seb
