Default Changing Oil

What will happen if I overfill the recomended amount of oil, will it leak in the oil pan?

half a quart. It says 4.5 quarts and I fill it with 5 quarts

Or do I just drain it a little?

If you overfill, the oil foams - and foamy oil doesn't lubricate. You'll mess your engine up.

I think....

you could drain it if you want... i wouldn't.

run it hard for a week, that'll burn off some oil..no, that's a joke. don't do that.

half quart shouldn't get in the way of anything. check it frequently for foaming on the dipstick and under the fill cap first off. if you don't see anything, don't worry about it.

Well you said you poured .5 quarts than recommended. And you know that by? Use the dipstick to check the level. I use all 5 quarts when changing my oil. Right in between the 2 marks. (Inc. filter)

Good oil shouldn't foam a lot. If should be fine. I thought the reason for having too much oil inside was that it can pop out seals? whatevers....

Too much oil can actually hyrdolock an engine because the pan is too full and allowing the extra oil to get passed the rings and into the combustion chamber. That's how it works, IIRC anyways.

thats a new one...

you don't want to much oil is because it can get whipped up by the crankshaft as it spins, that will cause the oil to loose it's lubricity therefor causing engine damage.

OP,
check the dipstick. If the oil checks over the full line then drain some out. May be a little messy but just don't remove the drain bolt all the way, just enough to let some oil leak out. Had to do this on my girls car when her brother mistakenly put too much in.
