Default steering damper going crazy.

basically i have a gpr damper on my 05 600rr. and it's been on for roughly 4-5 months, it's usually dialed at 5, which is comfortable for me not to stiff not too loose, never had any problems.

well i went to take it for a ride this morning. pulling out my drive way making a left all of a sudden it feels like the handle bars dont' want to turn (lock up) so i put my leg down and bounce back or else i would have dumped it. then it loosens back and i almost fall off to the right... after riding for a bit it goes back to normal . any ideas!? i just don't want to take a corner at a moderate speed and the handle bars loosen and i take a good spill.

some people like GPR's, but I stayed away because they leak, and they also do this. you're not the first. Give a call to them, and they act like it's never happened before. The daytona is getting a Pit bull!

Ohlns is where it is at, a bit pricey, but worth it.

I had good luck with the Ohlins damper on my old bike. I have never used a GPR, so I can't really comment too much on them. In fact, I have never used a rotory style damper, so I am cluless as to why it would do that. It sounds like an internal problem, perhaps a piston sticking or something (I have no cluse how those work, so it may not even have pistons).

The ohlins one is the cheapest, and I mean the long stick one.
The Scotts damper is suppose to be the best, and yes it is made by ohlins, and has on the fly adjustment as does the GPR

so i checked and i seen a rubber grommet (sp?) pinched against one of the screws and oil was leaking out of it. who knows how long it's been like that. gpr ftl bad bad day....

on a better note, i'll take it back to roseville cycle and hopefully they'll handle it for free since it's been under six moths since they installed it. if not i'll take your advice life's sux die.

gpr has the best customer service, better than scotts from what i've experienced. Call it in and they'll take care of you. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm glad you managed to save it.

So roseville cycle is going to charge me $136.50 to remove the damper, $13 to ship it to gpr for service then $136.50 to reinstall. $286 total hardly worth it... soooO i'm not exactly mechanically inclined when it comes to bikes. basically i'm just wondering:

1) how hard is it to remove?
2) if i do remove it, will i be able to ride my bike?
3) any precautions i should look out for while installing/reinstalling?

here's a quick dislcaimer: I'd never let anyone but a VERY good friend work on my bike. And if you're going to charge me anymore than dinner, then I can do it myself.

That said...the one and only GPR i've ever put on took me 20 minutes...Are you seriously that mechanically inept to not be able to put on and take off 5 bolts? Yes, you can do it yourself, Yes, it's SUPER easy. Cruise 600rr.net, and I'm sure there's more than one how to.

You're welcome. Check out 100rr.net also, as that bike can't be much different for the install/uninstall. If you need any help, PM me and I'll give you my phone number, and I have a buddy that can talk you through it.

I've never put one on a 600RR, I could do it, but I'd just be using an online guide like he could be. So instead, I have a good friend who loves honda's, and has had every damper made for the 600RR.

Yes, you don't need a steering damper to ride. Most people don't have one to begin with. You could always get a rebuild kit for it and save the hassle of shipping it, there not much to them.

$135 to remove a damper is highway robbery. The rates they quoted you are insane.

For a mechanically inept person there are more than ample online resources to walk you through removing and reinstalling one. It's much easier than you think.
