Default Ecsta MX vs. Azenis RT-615

I posted this on 8thgen but so far everyone's just looking and no one responding so I'll try my luck here, lol.

I've narrowed down my upcoming tire purchase to a couple options (I think) but I just wanted to get some opinions from people who have owned these tires before. First off, these would be dedicated summer tires for daily driving with auto-x and track use occasionally. I also tend to drive pretty 'spirited' and run negative camber so I know I'm facing more treadwear issues than the average commuter. I've heard from a friend locally that he wouldn't recommend DD use on the Azenis because of the treadwear issue but I also have another friend using them on his FG2 and hopes to get two summers' use out of them by rotating them every 1000 or so miles.

How does the treadwear compare with the Ecsta's? I keep hearing the Azenis gets amazing traction but have never run into a comparrison of the two to know which one is superior or by how much.

Anyways, obviously any input is appreciated since I'm not getting it anywhere else.

(PS- I really hate shopping for things like this, you can never know truly how it performs until you try it)

Since I can't offer a first hand experience with the tires you're comparing, maybe this will help you out.

Wheel and Tire forum
RoadRacing / Autocross forum

Ecsta MX reviews @ TireRack.com

Tire rack has great reviews and comparisons, but they don't sell Falkens. I think you should try searching the wheel and tire forum or the autocross forum here on HT (links at the top). If you still don't have the answer/info you want then post your question in one of those sections. Good Luck

Thanks man.

I know, Tire Rack not selling Falken really killed my decision making because their reviews are awesome.

look into Hankook RS2's. Theyre very similar to the Azenis, only at a cheaper price.

615's are great for autoX. they grip well cold. I don't think they're such a good choice for hpde's, as they've known to overheat easier and get greasy (not my direct experience, but hearsay). I have had exp with the MX as a dd and hpde tire. it's good all-around. it grips very well, is predictable when you lose grip, consistent on extended hpde runs, wears pretty good. it's even comfortable, and not to mention also very cheap.

I have had the 215 azenis, but did not like them at all. they grip good. steering resonse is great, but I find them to be a bit unpredictable when pushed hard. The mx are more forgiving.

Have you tried posting in the "wheel and tire" forum? This is like asking what size turbo would be best in here instead of the forced induction forum.

seems like your limiting yourself too tires in the same price range... i would like to pick up a pair of rt 615 but i think a lot of honda heads pick it up because the next guy is rocking them.

x2 on these tires.... they also last longer than 615's. I have ran both of them and the RS2's really do hold up longer and dont get as greasy as 615's once they are heat cycled a few times.

yes, and i liked them more than my kumho mx's.

if youre not worried about tire life, you live in southern california, get the azenis, if you want something that will last a bit longer, try the rs2's, or as it looks that they are even better, try the new dunlop direzza z1 star specs

For what it's worth, I run the Azenis on my '07 Si for autocross and daily driving. I have a moderately heavy foot so about 15K is about all I can expect out of them but I like the way they stick on north Georgia mountain roads. I've also run them for hot laps at Road Atlanta and have noticed that they start to loose grip after about 10 laps (25 miles). One alternative you didn't mention are the Bridgestone RE01R's, way sticky and don't fade as bad though a bit mor expensive, I'm going to switch to them for the next autocross season.

Or that the RT615 dominated the STS autocross for quite sometime, until the Potenza Re01R came out, which cost a lot more.
