H22 or Rebuild H23?
Hey,
I have a 92 Prelude with an H23 in it right now I have headers, a port and polish head and AEM underdrive pulleys(got them for $28 new.) It Seem to be blowing a little blue. Its not a huge amount but when aircare comes around I dont want to fail. I can get an H22 at a local engine importer for about 800, or I can rebuild my H23. What would be the best choice? All work will be done by me so I dont need to worry about paying for the swap or anything.
Thanks,
-Greg

I would also hang onto your H23 bottom end, then rebuild it with some high compression pistons. Or if you are going turbo in the future, low compression. Either way, you have a spare bottom end as long as its not messed up.

All you need is the P13 ECU and the engine. Assuming the car is manual shift already. Its a very easy swap if you have some common sense and a good tool set.
Yeah thats what I was eaning toward. My brother has done 3 swaps on civic before so ifi need help I can ask him. I'm also interested in getting the ecu tuned does anyone know how i can get this done for adecent price? ane yeah ive got a h23 5 speed so ill just keep that tranny. thanks for the input

If anyone knows anythuing about crome and what i can control using it tht would be great. Yeah ive got a h23 5 speed so ill just keep that tranny. Thanks for all the help
Rebuild a high compression cammed H23 and spank stock H22 swaps all day long.
My 2.3 liter 11.7:1 nonVTEC buld made 200whp and 184wtq for about $1000.

What have you got done to your H23? I want to be able to pass aircar so i wouldnt want to get too agressivce cams. would the crower stage 2 pass aircare do you think? Did oyu get new pistons and everything? H22 swap when im done would prob be like 1500 so if i wasto pur 1500 into my h23 how much power do you think i could get(considering what i already have done) and what would you recommend doing?
oh and the other thing ismy h23 has 240000km on it... but I guess if I was to rebuild it it wouldnt be a huge deal or would it...

97mm crank, cams DC header, P5M Prelude pistons, Crower Stage 3 cams, with valvetrain and tuning.
It's a little complicated but you wouldn't pass emissions. So nevermind.

well when i ordered my h22a from hmotorsonline.com i put my money into fixing up the motor. don't get me wrong, the motor was absolutely beautiful from hmo. but you should do the basics. timing belt, and other maintenance items so when you drop it in, you know you have a healthy, strong motor. but that's me.

I changed the water pump, timing, and balancer belt plus every seal and gasket I could get to without pulling the head off. Basically every seal but the head gasket. No point in spending money on upgrading a motor that wont hold up.

Yeah I agree what i was planning on doing is dropping it in see how it runs then if its great ill do the things i wanted to and if not ill fix the problems and the continue.
so if im trying to get as much power out of an h22 by puting 1200 in to it staying N/A what woudl you guys suggest

If you go the h22a route...you'll need a jdm p13 ecu, which I don't think can be tuned. The usdm p13 will starve your jdm h22a of fuel slightly, if I'm correct. The p14 ecu will obviously not run VTEC, and I think stays in limp mode constantly...but it can be used for testing purposes, I.E. making sure the car starts/runs. You'll also obviously need your h23a transmission unless you get a motor/trans combo from whomever you purchase from.
You will also need *at least* the following from your h23 motor; fuel rail (jdm h22a has a left-feed rail and your fuel line won't reach), entire engine harness, intermediate shaft, distributor+external coil(unless you do the super-easy fuse mod in order to use your h22a dizzy), and usually the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate(most jdm h22as Ive seen were from auto cars). I say "at least" because half the time you get an imported motor...parts will be missing or broken, and can usually be replaced with h23 parts. Don't sell your h23a until your h22a is in and running!
As far as ECU choices, if you want to tune...go with a p28 or p72, chip and tune. One won't utilize knock, the other won't utilize iab/secondaries...but you can work around those issues without any problems.
As for the wiring of your; VTEC solenoid, VTEC oil switch, IAB, Knock....people will tell you all day long that you need a RyWire Sub-Harness. I bought one...and it was a waste of $70. Sure they make awesome harnesses...but the 92-96 Prelude already has knock and IAB, and they already have pre-existing wiring for both of the VTEC functions...they're just un-unused plugs found in the passenger shock tower area. Easy stuff.
I just finished a jdm h22a engine/jdm p13 ecu/usdm h23a trans swap into my '93 Si. It was intimidating at first because I've always been an Integra/B series fan...but it was actually very easy, and all the problems I had were simple/stupid and fixed easily. If you do this and need any advice or help, feel free to Private Message me.

Aren't the h23 and h22 blocks the same?
Aren't the h23 and h22 blocks the same?
H23 is a 2.3 litre H22 is a 2.2 litre yeah i had thought about that cause bigger displacement the better but my engine has 230000km on it and the one im getting will have like 70000 so Id rather have that
I know the difference in liters.
I'm saying...I think the blocks themselves are the same, it's the heads that are different. Anyone with some knowledge on this care to fill us in?
EDIT: Be sure to read my post, about 4-5 posts up...there's a lot of info there you need to know.
