99 Prelude SH with problems.
Hey guys, I just signed up after a friend told me about these forums.
I got a 1999 Honda Prelude Type SH, with a 150k on it.
The car has an AEM cool air intake, and what looks to be a high volume fuel rail and adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
Theres a couple of problems I'm having which only started appearing after I had been driving the car day to day for work. I've search for each problem, and found others with the same problem but I could provide more detail as to the symptoms hence why I'm making a separate post.
I put 92 in my car because of the 10:1 compression on the engine.
1.) After driving the car for a while or being in stop and go traffic. As I clutch the car and stop, the car will drop low in RPM's and then recover.
It only ever stalled once, after I was going up a hill, and clutched in and applied the brakes to stop and then it just dropped really low in the RPM's and stalled at the stop sign. I noticed that if I turn the wheel sometimes I can see the RPM's also drop, this will happen from time to time.
After I got home today, and pulled into the driveway. I was able to drop the RPM's easily. I took the car out of gear and placed the parking park on. I then tapped gas pedal to take the engine to 1500rpm's and then let off my foot and each time it would drop into low rpm's. I noticed that it would then go back up and idle at 800-500rpm's as it would normally. It also smelled really funny, almost like the cat(?) was going an egg smell/gas smell. I haven't cleaned out the air filter on the cold air intake as I assumed honda did (they also did a 300 point inspection and didn't notice that the rotors were missing 1 out of 2 phillips screws on the front rotors).
I haven't really replaced anything yet, and I was thinking of doing the fuel filter (are there 2?), air filter, oxygen sensor, and PCB(sp) (i know my old lude had one). The battery looks new, and the posts and connectors are good but I'm going to clean them up and see if it solves anything.
Any suggestions?
2.) I noticed after about 4 weeks that there was an weird smoke/steam coming from my engine, not enough to be OMG PULL OVER. But enough to investigate.
I popped the hood and noticed that my fan's weren't on, and then they randomly came on. I had been driving for some time, about 20 minutes and rather aggressive (enough that I could feel the heat from the engine with the hood up). The temperature gauge was at half, which is what it usually is. When I started the car the gauge was right at the bottom (so I think the thermo or gauge is working fine, kinda clueless).
The second thing I noticed was that the radiator was bleeding or almost over flowing. I noticed all the fins had coolant (green wattery substance, assuming anti-freeze and water but I didn't put it in, honda did). It looked like the steam was the coolant getting hot on the outside of the radiator. Hot enough to dissipate into steam.
I couldn't see where it was coming from at all, but today I noticed that there were bubbles/leaking on a spot on the rad. So I think its probably cracked now, but I didn't see that before when I first discovered this problem.
I also noticed I could feel the heat from the rad when my had was about 2/3 feet away. The fans weren't even on, I knew they worked because when I pulled over the first time they jumped on for a second.
At this point, I think I'm going to need to replace my radiator and my thermostat or something that controls the fans.
Love ludes, but this one is giving me a hard time.
Thanks for any help!
