california emissions testing (smog)
i have a 90ef stock d15 motor and i cant pass smog for two reasons...the first reason is my No2 sensor isnt working....to be honest im not sure what that is, i know what the o2 sensor is but not that one.
also on the dyno test where the tech has to keep the rpms withing those two straight lines...my rpms kept fluctuating i guess over the limit and under the limit. he asked me if i've ever had problems with power in the car and i told him no, because it drives fine and i never hear the rpm change.
anyways i didnt have him elaborate on the problems since i had the hook up and got passed regardless of the test. but i'de like to know what the hell is goin on.
thanks,
steve

Sounds like you got a rookie fresh out of school. See what happens when you try to save a buck.
No2 sensor He he he!
Could not even keep it between the lines. He he he.... thud.
Please do not return to this place. Have your "hook-up" check it out for you. I think he did mean an O2 sensor.

see thats [freak]in funny cuz he has been a mechanic for almost 20 years haha (family friend) but i have never heard of that damn sensor. i do all my own work on my two cars, this and my ek. but of course i cant smog the damn thing!
so its basically user error if the rpms seem to "fluctuate" out of the lines? and i thought if u blow a sensor the ecu throws some code?
thanks,

The two lines are the MPH. Right down the middle of the two lines are either 15 or 25mph. So the bottom line is 14mph and the top is 16mph then it is 24 or 26mph. The rpm reading is on the right side.
So he could not get your car to sit between the lines. Usually points to a sticky throttle/pedal.
I have my tech's try to test my car and they usually just give up after three times. I just laugh and hop in and do it for them to see that it can be done. It has become one of my "Rookie" tests I give them before we hire them.
Some are tricky!.
To answer your throw a code Q. Not all the time. The ecu looks for a good signal, if the signal is stuck in a good position the ecu will think everything is normal. So an O2 sensor can output a .5volt signal all the time and the ecu will think nothing is wrong. When the O2 signal should vary all the time.

ok that does make a little more sense now. but damnit the mph thing pisses me off now cuz its at the shop now being "passed" for extra money and if that was seriously the only problem i could have asked him if i could hold the pedal down at least to try....
not to mention o2 sensors are roughly 50 bucks
damnit
