Slightly considering an ITR...
Hey everyone, haven't been on h-t for years it seems and I had a question....
Sorry If this topic or something simliar has been posted but I would like to give my situation and see if you guys think it would be smart to get an ITR in my position.
I'm 22 finishing school in a couple semesters and work near my house and will obviously continue my career and quite possibly change it when i am out of school but will stay local.
I can't get over wanting a honda, mainly an itr but from what I remember it's hectic owning one as a daily driver and having to worry about everything i.e theft and douche bags...
I wonder if things have cooled down a bit? Or if I should just stick to purchasing/leasing my next car brand new. Something reliable and comfortable. I don't want an S2k. I currently drive a c-class and don't like it much, its nice and ever since I stopped building cars I'm convinced that modifying is the worst investment possible for those who really shouldn't be doing it. I don't plan on spending too much money monthly on my next car. Hondas are so damn reliable, fun and beautiful. I know the insurance rates are high and I couldn't imagine what they are at this point but that's maybe one area you guys can help.
I guess an RSX/TSX is also an option but nothing can beat the good ol R in my view. My friends would call me crazy but it never hurts getting insight from actual owners.
-Thanks

Theft has NOT calmed down at all.
If your going to get one as a Daily Driver, I would suggest only with a garage, and serious/layered alarm system.
Have you ever driven a GS-R? It's not "too" much different than an ITR

Not surprised to hear that...especially with the modified car culture blowing up in the past few years.
I owned a GSR and sold it sooner than I should have besides the other little things on it I loved it mainly because of the buddy club racing specs I had, they were truly great.
It would be totally safe at work, and pretty damn safe at my home. I can't say the same for everywhere and anywhere else I always go. Maybe I could get my girl to drive all the time..haha.
For instance, I live in Los Angeles and would never park an ITR downtown at night even with the attendants around.

If you live in Hilo, HI, then yes I believe you can daily drive it. I do. But LA, is a whole new ballgame and wouldn't DD it. I wouldn't want to have the feeling every time I go to work and come out to see the R missing.

Get a quick release hub and a clutch lock. all you can do and even if they tow the **** you'll know. Desmon, the guy i linked above, will give you details. He did my last R, drove it and parked it EVERYWHERE without fear, never had an instance. He is gonna be doing my new R now this week!

Even tho I recently moved to SC (in the sticks) I just woke up from a nightmare...
I had gone up to Manhattan, NYC to visit my father and came out to find my car was stolen. Not a good way to wake up.
But glad it was just a dream/nightmare.
So owning a ITR comes all sorts of bagage

I'm sure theft has always been bad on the west coast, but on the east coast it is actually getting worse! When I first got my ITR in '03 I could take it basically anywhere locally, now that is just not the case. Luckily my living/daily driver situation has changed otherwise I probably wouldn't have it anymore, one way or another.
My prediction is that as ITRs come down in price more of them will be bought up by people who don't have a secure location to keep them or a daily driver. Unfortunately they will keep disappearing because of this.

Thanks guys, yea I actually have always had this theft prevention idea in mind that I would definitely use if I bought one. I really think (especially when schools over) that I could manage the car pretty well. I know it's sort of a difficult question to ask because through past experiences of driving some and seeing many, its hard to say no to one when you know the baggage that comes along, and also hard for you guys all to see my specific situation.
I'm not the stay at home type, im always out and about so that's what I worry about most, not my day to day routine.
I also don't trust even the greatest of alarm systems. I think one has to be creative in theft prevention beyond what you can install from a box. (speaking from what I know in the past).
Was there ever a thread on saving an ITR or what their theft prevention did for them or didn't do? I remember people posting separate stories but an updated thread would be cool to see.
I just know how ITR owners can get when it comes to sharing anything questionable that can give ideas to those who cant keep their damn hands off these timeless cars.

I had recently got a clutch lock too. Thing works like a beauty. You can get one for only 50-60 bucks at a kragen or autozone. It's virtually impossible to saw or drill through it. It's true that the only way to really steal your car after through clutch locks, release hubs, etc. is towing. However, i think the perpetrator would be going through TOO much just to tow an ITR, wouldn't you think? Nonetheless you never know, but just a thought..good luck on the ITR man hope you really get one
