Default Why does my steering wheel vibrate?

I have had an ongoing issue where my steering wheel shudders slightly at 110km/h, (70mph) and progressively gets worse as speed increases. At 130km/h (80 mph) it is very noticeable.

I have tried many things to trouble shoot this including alignment, balancing, new tires, and my front suspension has been inspected by two different mechanics who cannot see any problems with it. I recently changed the front rotors because they were warped, this did not solve this issue either.

After trying all these things I am out of options for what to do, does anyone know what it could be?

do you have after market wheels ? if so you may need some Hub Centrics to align the wheels properly.

No, the wheels/suspension/engine are stock.
It is a 1996 CX (so the steering is not power).

do the bounce test on the struts..... push down a couple times then let go. If it does not stop immediately, it could be the struts . basically if the front end is really floaty, then your struts may be bad and that will cause Vibration. I have to replace mine next week for that reason.

it could be about 500 things and would probaly not be worth wasting time
axle, rims, bearings, alignment, struts, springs, almost anything that rotates you know, plus its real hard finding **** like that that only appears when ur going 70mph, u cant just jack it up and see it

It is 100% the axles.

I'm only saying this because he has done everything possible to check out the problem.

The axles have inner bearings inside the boot and those wear out as with all moving parts.

Now if he says that they have been changed, I'm assuming he changed them with aftermarket (Autozone) axles and those axles are TRASH.

It could be a lot of things. An alignment will tell you so much about your car. It's weird how no one picked something up in the suspension. Maybe retards? But it could be a million things. Maybe you just shouldn't be going 80mph to begin with and you won't have to worry at all.

And telling him not to go 80MPH is very logical.

I was going to suggest that but the alignment tech and all these other mechanics should of noticed/checked it.

They should have, but you do never really know. Possibly a bent rim?

Should have been noticed when installing new tires and balancing.

I give up here.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess the axles are the best bet? Any way to tell for sure?

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

unbalanced tires, warped rotors, under/over-torqued lug nuts.

i had the same problem. It turned out to be my tires. If your tires are unbalanced or you ever ran it with low air, your tires are done for. Borrow a friends good set of tires and you'll see the difference.

I've ran auto zone replacement axles in two different cars of mine.. also for a period of 2-3 years without any problems.

I will haft to suggest that it could possible be bad wheel bearings, axles.. and possibly bent suspension components..

They could be so slightly bent that it would be invisible to the naked eye or very hard for you to tell... that could also cause vibration.

have you actually looked at the alignment numbers after you've gotten your alignment done? i've been to a couple of places that will say they aligned your car to the best they can because your alignment bolts are stuck and they are too lazy to get them unstuck

I'm interested in this one too, my '92 si does the EXACT same thing. Slight vibration at about 70mph (indicated, actual mph is 6-7 mph slower at this speed), and gets progressively worse to where its very noticeable/annoying at 80mph.

I changed tires and rims, also got aligned, problem was exactly the same...

My wifes old car (1997 VW Golf GTI) had that problem while I was on deployment. And she was in need of new tires and that fixed the problem. She only got two tires and they did an alignment and it went away. It vibrated everytime we were on the highway doing about 70-80 mph.

I second axles.

You have a bent halfshaft. You need to hoist your car up, (on a hoist) put it in gear, and look at the halfshafts. I bet you'll see that one is bent.

Trust me, I had "Brand New" tires when this happened to me and had the tire techs rebalance the tire again but I still had the shake.

When they worked on my front end they must of bent the axle, because it didnt shake at all when I took it in.
