electrical gremlin car sometimes starts
Solve this mystery and receive the made-up crx guru, you rock award!!(does not exist).
Specs: 89 crx si
92 b18a engine swap
50 trim greddy turbo
Soft dyno tuned to 220hp 187 tq soon to be tuned to about shy of 300
Car has intermittent starting problems. Symptoms are either start with no problem and drive happy or turn the key to ignition, hear the main relay click, walbro 255 fuel pump prime and shut off and nothing. There is no crank, no slow crank, and power is full to everything. Now before you say it’s my battery it’s a new odyssey p680 and before that an optima red top so it’s not the battery. Oh main relay is brand new so rule that one out. Starter/solenoid checked out fine at Murrays and pep boys so that’s not the problem. Clutch switch bypassed so that’s not the problem, all grounds are brand new replaced with cranking cable 2-4 gauge wire in engine bay. Now here comes the gremlins, I multi-tested the signal to the starter and with ignition off 0volts (good), ignition on 7volts (Not good), starter signal wire disconnected from starter and ignition on (12+ volts good). It seems the volts drop when signal wire is connected t o starter and ignition is on. To my recollection 12 volts is supposed to be there when ignition is on right? Car will jump start, randomly start like all is well and drive me nuts!!!
Im sure I missed some other stuff but please help a brother Honda out.
Oh and i read so many posts and tried everything.

grounds have all been replaced with new 4 gauge wire to tranny, starter, valve cover and frame there might be more cant think off the top of my head
you need a new ignition switch, take your column apart and replace, you can test as well but the contacts in them usually get burnt and fatigued from much use. As such current does not flow though very well( like you stated 7v at starter) makes sense I would bet a
its your problem . please send you rock award my way thank you

originally i thought that was the problem but everyone states that it will not hinder your car from starting only stay started. I pulled it apart once before cleaned the terminals real good and after it seemd to fix it but two weeks later same symptoms. Either way order new ignition switch when it comes in ill post the results
