Default Temp Gauge..please help

Alright guys here's the deal. A while back...probably 6 months ago I started a thread on here about my temp gauge. First off it's a '91 hatchback with a Y8 mini-me swap. While I'm driving my temp gauge will go crazy and jump around or it will just go to the "H" and stay for a little bit then come back down. I have a brand new radiator so I don't thing that is it. I've check hoses and nothing is leaking. I put a new temp. sending unit it ( the little piece right below the distributor ) and that didn't work. I even put a whole new instrument cluster in because I thought maybe the cluster was bad. Still, none of this worked. Does anybody of an idea what this may be? There is no check engine light coming on if that matters. Any help would be great. Thanks

You sure its not actually overheating? Maybe the thermostat isnt opening in time to keep the engine cool.

I've check all the grounds under the hood and they all seem to be good and tight. Any other grounds I should check out?

just because the part is new doesnt mean its good.

You could almost throw the overfill bottle away and just check the radiator fluid level itself instead...

how long does it take from starting the engine up to being "pegged at H' and how long from there does it go to normal operating temp? What type of load are you putting on the engine while all this is happening?

It temp. gauge will stay at the normal position until I drive it. Even while driving it will stay normal until about 10-15 minutes into driving the car.

I am experiencing PRECISELY the same problem with my 92 vtec-e, and it's nickel and diming me to death!!!

replaced temp sending unit and thermostat to no avail. Considered replacing cluster until i read this thread, and now i'm wondering if it's not just the wire that might be bad. I don't, however, know where it would be grounding to.

Very frustrating, indeed.

Any help would be so much appreciated. I thought i was the only one with this problem!

If i do have to replace the wire end to end, that's fine- i would just need to know if the wire goes through any junctions or if it leads directly to the gauge.

Also, does your fuel gauge give unreliable readings? mine does that, which is why i questioned the gauge cluster.

Thanks!!
