87 Octane in the 5th gen?
I own a 2000 Prelude and it says "Premium Fuel Only" on the cluster. However, who is pumping regular 87 Octane instead of the premium 91 Octane? Do you see the mpg decrease/increase when you pump 87 Octane? I'm trying to find out which fuel I can squeeze the most mpg out of. Thanks.
don't downgrade. When i first got my prelude not to long ago i didn't realize i had to use premium so i used regular and my car wasn't running right, kinda slugish. Then when i was searching the net for prelude parts i noticed the speedo saying premium and thought thats why my car ran like crap lol. So needless to say i use premium now. As far as mpg i think you may get less with regular 87 cause the car will most likely run like crap.
your car is designed to runon premium, and the pisswater 91 octane in cali barely counts as premium. If you had a tunable ecu you could retune for low octane...basically detune it to perform much worse but be safe on 87 octane.
running 87 octane on a prelude will make baby jesus cry.
don't cheap out and just pay the extra dollar or so to run 91. your car won't run right and might ping if you were to use 87.
edit: and the only way you can get the BEST mpg is if you were to:
-change fluids (oil/tranny/etc)
-replace spark plugs/wires
-check tire pressure
-don't hit VTEC or drive with a heavy foot
-drive at a constant 65mph
-don't use A/C and don't have your windows rolled down
-etc.
i'm sure there's a bunch of stuff i'm missing, but if you were to follow just those things mentioned above, you'll get at LEAST 25mpg.

-Change air filter/clean
-Keep your 5th gen as empty as possible (no excess weight in trunk, etc)
-no sudden braking/ hard cornering
...You pretty much touched all the essentials for efficient fuel economy.

I run 91, but I would run higher if I knew where to find it around here. I ran 87 once when I first got my Prelude running and will never do it again. On 91 I get about 26.5 mpg consistently.
The reason our car requires Premium Fuel is because we have a high-compression engine. With a high-comp motor you need premium fuel to prevent pre-ignition issues. Lower octane fuel in a high compression motor will ignite prematurely (ie before the spark plug fires) from hot spots on the cylinder wall causing knock and ping. Premium fuel does not do this because of the higher octane. I just pay the higher price for premium .20/gal because running 87 and buying a can/bottle of octane boost at the auto parts store COSTS MORE than premium at the pump.

I have a fourth gen and it sees nothing but 93 octane. I put 87 in it before just out of habit, (my work van runs 87) and it ran like crap. It was definitely noticeable.
I have a h23 in my 4th gen and will not run 87 in mine. Like others have said, running 87 will cause knocks. In turn detonate, basically a a flame shooting out at a million mph = BOOOOOOOOOM!!!
I have an h22 (obd1) swapped 3g lude, and I was forced to put 87 octane in on a road trip once. Turns out the hick mountain town I chose to fill up in didn't have anything but 87!
Long story short, the car seemed to perform even better than normally. I know logically that shouldn't make any sense at all, but I was able to eat a 350z on the highway during the trip.

retard the timing a few degrees and it should run decent on 87.
if you really want to improve your mileage (at the cost of a bit of performance) put in an accord transmission. Your revs at 70 mph will drop by 662 rpms.
If you do the work yourself you could probably make money off the switch too because the prelude trans is worth more than the accord trans.

wait what?
if you roll down your window you lose mpg?
wtf?
my friend runs 87.........man he gets like 200 a tank....and thats driving normally.......sad......
