Drilling out holes on a water pump?
Hey everyone,
I just pulled my old water pump off, and the dowels are stuck in the block. I tried and tried and tried and CANNOT get the damn things out! SO, I decided i'd drive out the new dowels in my new pump. Got them out but sort of destroyed them...
Next I tried to fit the new pump onto these two dowels, but can't! It seems like just WAY too tight of a fit.
So, my question is: Do you think i'd be okay drilling a little bit, and making the holes just a HAIR bigger? Just barely, so that the dowels will slide into the new pump? It seems like it would... but I thought i'd ask!
Thanks everyone!

how much bigger are the old dowels? is there any corrosion on them that might be hurting you? another thing you might be able to do instead of drilling the waterpump try using some sand paper and run around the dowels to take a lil off if it isn't much. also if there is any corrosion on the dowels this will take it off maybe try a lil grease or some spray lube to get the dowels to slide in if its just a snug fit not a big difference in size. also when you tried to remove the old ones did you mare them up a lil and there is a bur or somthing stopping you from sliding the water pump over them? the sand paper would help there too
Ya, the old dowels look to be the same size as the new ones/holes.
There is quite a bit of red residue on em... The bolts holding on the water pump were terribly corroded too. I'll try a little sand paper in the morning before I bust out the drill. That's a good idea.
As far as the drilling... I figure if I sand the dowels and just CAN'T get the new WP to slide on, i'll just SLIGHTLY drill the holes a little bigger. Couldn't hurt anything I dont' think. As long as I don't go crazy. I'm not sure about what sort of clearances the WP blades have, but i'd assume it's a little more then 1/32" or anything like that.

Tried sanding the dowels... didn't work.
Ended up drilling them out quite a bit so it would slide up onto the dowels. Worked out great.
Timing belt broke today... one thing after another...
