Timing belt cover (lower) and block

Is there suppose to be a 1-2 mm gap between the lower timing belt cover
and the block ? I crawled under the car and noticed this gap between the cover and the block. You could just barly see the timing belt over the crank pulley from underneath. Did the mech forget to put some sort of gasket back on ?
