Default Proper mounting of harnesses...double-sided tape okay?

I don't like wearing my seatbelt while racing because I don't trust the engineers' judgement at Honda on safety, so I was thinking about installing a harness. I tried velcro, but that was starting to ruin the fabric on my 60 lb. reclining all-out-race seats. The double-sided tape seems to hold pretty well (the thick foam stuff, not the scotch tape stuff, I'm not stupid), and I just have to remember to change it every day since the heat melts the adhesive. I need it to hold me pretty tight, since I replaced my airbag with an all-out-race chrome chain steering wheel and I could only afford an open-face helmet. This will be just for street, autocross, and some HPDE use. No wheel-to-wheel racing...I'm not stupid.

-231, who's getting a kick out of this recent rash of pseudo-safety posts.

That will work just fine, but you obviously haven't tried the good 3M velcro or the JDM market stuff. It works really well.

I also recommend getting a fire bottle. The chrome 1 lb units work the best because they are bright and easy to see through all of the smoke.
Also, make sure you mount it on the passenger side A Pillar. You won't actually be able to reach it in an emergency, but mounting it on the drivers side A pillar would be stupid because it will cause the glare to distract you when displaying your skillz.
And don't be a dumbass and mount it down low where nobody can see it, what would be the point of that?

yea, the jdm velcro is the shizzy. i use it on my harness and on my firebottle. its realy good. and don't listen to those who will say that the firebottle will become a projectile if the airbag goes off. they don't know what there talkin about.

While we're on this topic of safety... I've been noticing quite a bit of heavy smoke on acceleration lately, and figured all my mad skillz street racing is starting to finally take a toll on my engine... and could eventually involve my own safety. I figured I should finally take that step-up in safety and get an extinguisher in the car... just in case. So, I took my mom's kitchen extinguisher out from under the sink.. I was thinking it would be fine for any small fire.. but I wasn't sure. So, I stopped by the grocery store and picked up another... Now I'm prepped! I also didn't like the fact that one of them was kinda dirty, and they were two different brands, so I used some chrome paint I found in the basement to make 'em look phat. Now I'm ready for anything... and Look'n good too... got one for each A-pillar. Form and Funktion rocks!

Default Here's a suggestion

You guys are all missing the boat.

THE WAY to mount a set of harnesses is with anchor bolts. If you don't know what I mean, here's an explanation. You can actually buy these bolts that you pound into the mounting surface. The head is a screw head. So once you've put this thing into your chassis you tighten up the screw, and the part behind the (frame, floorpan, firewall, drywall) expands.

It will never rip out! I use these things in my house to mount all my k0rn posters and my last place ECHC trophies and they work! I figure if it'll work with a house (which by the way is bigger than a car), it's fine for a race car.

Nah, ALL YA' ALL GOT IT WRONG!!!

It's cheap, it's simple, it's disposable... That's right... It's Duct Tape... I don't even use a harness, I just sit down, and have my buddy CRACK MONKEY (Alistair) Wrap a roll of duct tape around me and the seat. when it's time to get out, I just slice through with a box cutter....

Dan
(Who is actually contemplating trying this at the next autocross)

Y0! I use the 3M shizzle myself. It holds me maaaaaad tite in my Arospeed. I had a set of Weapon R all-out 2" racing harnesses but they wrinkled my size 54 Junco's and the honeys don't like wrinkled gear so they had to go. I also just installed a set of Monkey Barz. Someone said I need to pad them but then that would make them look worse so I am gonna leave them open. I had to move my fire extinguisher though because the barz blocked it. What is the point of having one if you can't see it? I mounted it on the passenger side Monkey Bar and it is tite. The women are mad crazy about my ride now!

So, if my ricey, pricey track car
has a funky monkey back bar,
but the belts of nappy strapping
are only wrapped when lapping...

...and the bracket for my cam
is mounted wham-bam-ma'am,
on a Toda-style bracket
where my Snell-M MIGHT not whack it...

...when, with X-drilled floater rotors
I pull a left-foot, late-brake-fake
(though I don't know who I'm fooling,
since I gots no extra cooling)...

Then is it safe?

With apologies to Dr. Suess

you guys use harnesses?

Seatbelts just wrinkle my clothes.

and brake pads? those are too heavy... I got a parachute - one use application.

i got a skateboarding helmet for track days.

i have passengers zip-tie themselves onto the seat.

the firebottle is mounted on the rear bumper. So EVERYONE can see it.

Excuse me Mr. Bongpacker, I'll have whatever Kirk's having. Word. Actually the correct answer is that if you have mad skillz, you do not need a harness. It's extra weight, leave it out. At that, take out your seat as well, then you will be at the optimum viewing height so when you straight ahead or up, you will be able to see nothing else but your Indiglo 5-way reverse-lit Flux Capaciting gauges.

OMG, I was going to make a post just like this Saturday when I was sitting at home bored out of my skull. I saw 3-4 of the topics that come up every week and it kinda made me laugh. I didn't post cuz I realized that these types of posts often end up having some good discussions (mostly off topic ) I think I need to make a tinfoil hat though so you f#*%ers will stop reading my thoughts...

Be sure that if you use double sided tape on the harness, to mount the rollbar/rollcage onto blocks of wood and simply set it in the car. That's better than drilling holes in the floorpan of the car. Better yet, get those kick *** monkey barz!

This is good stuff. Here is my addition and it is REAL, no BS I really saw this.

This kid had a early Dodge Colt or Mitsubishi Mirage and he used to always cruise around town and would always come to the local autocrosses but would park far away and never race. One day I run into him at a fast food place and he asks me some typical Yo Boy type questions. I am really nice to him and leave before he does. As I am leaving I see in his car what looks like a helmet hanging from a roll hoop. I walk over and look in and sure enough there is a old motorcycle helmet (70's era) hanging from the center hoop of a roll bar. As if that was not funny enough. The roll bar was made of PVC pipe and sprayed black. The entire thing was PVC.
He saw me looking and came out and said that he would be at the next autocross now that he had some safety stuff.
