Default best way to paint hood

whats the best way to paint your hood, short of using a spray gun?? i've tried to paint my hood 3 different times now with spray paint and it keeps turning out like ****. Hell, I spent 5 hours today, ill post a pic at the bottom.
steps to my painting.

sand down to metal/almost metal
filler primer and sanding going from 600 grit to 1k grit
2-3 layers of gloss black (lightly sanded with 1k and 2k)
then clear coar (lightly sanded once again)
all sanding done was wet, and most of the work was done in 70* sunny weather.

before:

after:

I'm thinking about using rustoleum from Lowes or Home Depot and applying it with a roller... I dunno, someonw please help.

-Steve

(**** looking at the pics, it looked better before, and i did that in 1.5 hrs)

dont use a roller, well imp use a foam brush, mix the paint about 1/2 and 1/2, look in my built thread here is wat would i do:

1; sand down use a machine sander 80 griz, till smooth, not muich paint,

2; resand by hand use 320

3; lay THIN layers of paint, about 4 layers, sand every 2 layer use 600 grit

4; final layer, sand with 800, 1000, 2000,

5; get a decent polish, i use 3m polish,

6; get a scratch remover, i used turtle scratch and siwrl remover,

7; put wax on, its shuljid be glass loook, ill post pics tomorow about my quarter panel,

oh ya, after u wet sand the final coat of paint, it be nice if u get a clear can and srapy LIGHT coats on there, so u can wet sand it and buff without dirty ur buffer wheel, i learn that hard way, and it shines ur paint more,

2 coats, wet sand 600
2 more coats wet sand 600
2 LIGHT coats of clear wet sand 800, 1000, 2000 buff with polish, then scratch remover, then wax WA LA, GLASSS

good luck

Im happy to see you gave it a shot but sometimes painting should be left to the pros.

well i sincerely appreciate the motivation. there's only one thing i love doing more than saving money by taking my car to pro's... and that's proving people wrong.

haha just kidding but ill post some pics when im finished, i only had time to do 2 coats today. but it already looks a little better.

dont sand the color coat before clear!!!!

if you use a tack cloth in between dry coats you should not have to sand the base color!

and if you use a buffer correctly with the right combanation of compounds and pad types and have the technique you will not have swirl marks!!!! one reason to take it to the pros!!!

and dont wax fresh paint!!!! it seals it up and fresh paint has to breath in order to cure properly!!!

I have alot more to say about painting but am lazy!!!

there are alot of elements in painting that many do not take in to consideration before tackling a project!

GL

I would take it to a body shop!!!

hmm well i've been using a foam brush to do the painting. using like a 2000 grit sandpaper isn't okay to use on the top coat to get rid of any lines that may have resulted? i have a lot of compounds and a lot of different grit sandpapers. but depending on how it looks after the clear ill be using a rubbing compound followed by a polishing wax.

this will be done tomorrow morning btw so ill have some pics up.

ummm well 1st dont use a brush your not painting a house!!!!

and yeah you can sand the clear, depending on how much clear you put on, you can start with 400 grit and work up to 3000 if you wanted to!!!

but the brush thing is a first for me!!!
sorry i thought you where using a rattle can or spray gun!!!

That's a huge misconception. There's plenty of people out there that have used a roller to paint their cars. You need to read the $50 paint thread.

or mind, it wont leave the lines because the paint its self is self level so just aply on thin coats, and it wil level out, and

wat u do it this:

put on paint, then go over it with same brush that is drying out with paint, and keep rool untill its smoooth, then 5 minutes later ur paint is self level and shine!! then wet sand with 800 light to get off the crap, wet san every 2 coats, till ur 6th then u wet sand 1000, 1500, 2000 and polish and buff!!! BAM DONE here is a pic of my trunk

ya i [freak]ed up my hood, didnt sand good enouhg, i was sick tired of sand paper, its always fixable, this paint is ez to work with, i fu [freak]ed up then just resand it 800 and re roll, thats simple, i did my whole car on my drive way LMAO
