Rotor Noise,,,scrapping the distributor

Default Rotor Noise,,,scrapping the distributor

car broke down,,, rotor was melted,,, shaving in the cap from it hitting the contacts for the plugs,,,i bought a new cap and rotor,,, drove it home,,, got out while it was running and heard some squeeking,,, took it all apart and shavings in the cap and contacts have been warn down in spots and its mainly the two contacts on the top of the cap,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,is my cam bearing shot???????is it just a bad part,,,do i need a new head,,, i drove the car from chicago to las vegas in 36 hours straight a month and a half a go,,,,i really think itsa warped cam and would like some other opionions...

I'd be willing to bet that the distributor bearing is shot. Was there dust all over the inside of it when you removed the cap?

dust from the contacts,,,,,same with the new one ,,,reason the old one was alum so it was silver and new one is brass and its gold dust now,,, not much dust the first time either,,, but the rotor was destroyed ,,,new rotor looks good...

You still may consider changing out your distributor if it happens again.

thanks you for you responces,,, i didnt put too much time into looking to what is going on under there,,, i thought the rotor ran on the same bearing but its separate? not sure still but i ordered a new assembly,,,i think your beyond right,,, i was about to take the cover off my head and start all that mess,,,really thank you for all your help

No, the rotor runs on the distributor shaft, which has a bearing. It was that bearing that I think is bad. Even if it is just the bearing, you'd be better off just getting a new dist.

i was thinking that it all ran on the cam shaft,,,,i thought my cam was bent,,,but your right thats why i ordered a whole new one,,, hopefully we got it all solved,,,or you did ,,,i got what your saying just not good at typing,,, i kinda want to see how long it will last the way it is,,, and you think its just from the car being so old or was it heat or binding from someother component that i should look at ...? your awsome Man,,,,,,,,

no its the dizzy bearing common problem, just grab the rotor I bet you can wiggle it back and forth. its most likely shot
