ninja 500 or 250??
I'd get the 250, learn how to corner with it, sell it after a ~year or two, and then be able to kick bootie on all those hosers who bought too big and still have not figured out how to ride

Brand new Ninja 250 is under $3k. They also hold their value pretty well. I would stay under a 600cc for your 1st bike, and many say that is too fast. Be sure to take the MSF course as well.
I could never understand how an 250cc motorcycle could be underpowered especially for a beginner. The only time I felt that was after 1 year or riding my 50cc motorcycle. But after swapping to a 80, then riding a 250cc, both feel fine to me. If you feel that its underpowered, i guess your going to fast IMO

I definately agree with blue95accord. The initial payout for the bike is less, and if/when you go to trade it off, you will most likely get more back on trade. Also if you crash/drop the bike, you won't be worried about the extra money you spent for the 500cc.
The last thing you need is more power when you are learning. learning control and leaning is key.
