Default Cleaning a junkyard Brake Master Cylinder.

Ive cleaned out the reservoir using simple green and then flushing it with water. Can I do the same to the Cylinder? It is full of old brake fluid and dirt. Can I use simple green and flush with water then let it dry and install it on my car?

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Just bench bleed it with clean fluid and keep changing out the fluid until its completely clean.

Its not on the car. I want to clean it before sticking it on the car.

Bench bleed with clean fluid. You stick it in a vise, fill up the reservoir, and stick your fingers into the holes. With a screwdriver or something similar, press in the piston. Let fluid flow out, but before you release the piston, plug the holes (sealing them off from air) so as not to let air back into the cylinder. Then let the piston go. Repeat above until you either need to add more fluid, or until you don't get any more bubbles and/or no more gunky fluid.

I believe it says right on the cover, DOT 3 or 4 fluid ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any other kind of lubricant, or solvent, will destroy the seals, bench bleed it with brake fluid, if there is crap in the bore, you shouldn't have bought it anyways. Just my 2 cents if you want it to last...

I figured that was for braking purposes only, not cleaning. But I can see how it could destroy the seals and cause leaks. Thanks for the heads up!

And thanks to everyone else who recommended bench bleeding. Ive never done it, so it will be a fun new adventure!
