Keys...... What would you do?
Hi all,
I am the proud owner of 97ITR#40.... YES #40!... "Miss R" I call her, has been hidden in a garage for most of her life. 38,000 miles NO MODS! NOPE!... no mods... I am keeping her pure for all of you 30 years from now...
OK!.... to the big question.!
Just the other day my home was burglarized but Miss R was not taken (THANK GOD!) but the spare set of keys are gone... Yes they got the keys.... my original set of keys are in storage 1,400 miles away buried in some box from a divorce... The burglars can not take Miss R because, in the garage, I have her rims locked.
What would you do....
A. Go find the buried keys in some box 1,400 miles away and not worry about the burglars trying to take the car because it would be a real serious pro that could possibly pull the job off.
OR
B. Get the car re-keyed....Do not forget... Miss R is #40 and untouched. (collector car) In your opinion would re-keying the car in your mind devalue Miss R in the future?
I am torn on what to do....
Thank you for your opinions!

That'd be my first instinct, however almost every Type R stolen was done without the keys. A 97 is easy to hot wire. I think you're biggest concern is that thieves now know you have a mint R...if they didn't already know.
I'd focus on improving the security of the house/garage. From your description, I doubt you park heR in public, so you shouldn't have to worry about them following you and using the keys to steal heR from a parking lot, etc.
Good luck with everything. It's good to hear of another mint 97 out there
Pics?

Find a new garage and rekey her. Trust me, I tried to preserve my 97R as stock as possible....didn't want to put alarms on it and devalue it over the long run. Now, you should see pictures of my 97R after it got stolen and stripped
If they just came for the car it would probably be gone. They probably grabbed the keys on the way out, with the intention of taking whatever was in the garage. When they saw it was wheel-locked they just left not wanting the hassle. I doubt they intend to come back later, but you never know

Yes change the locks. Then move, they know where it is now. Next, install a multi-tiered security system with GPS fence, secret kill switch, etc. on the caR. Finally lock it in the garage, cover any windows so it can't be seen, padlock garage door from the inside and get several large dogs and firearms.
If you think this is excessive, you need to sell it quickly or you won't be "a proud owner" for long.

You forgot the Laser system that zaps away, and that house that gets on it's feet and runs down the street, as seen in The Simpsons.
Now those are awesome security measures.

O.K.... ! Thank you for all the advise... So, have any of you done a re-key? how much did it cost you? Who would you recommend?
Miss R did come with keyless entry remotes also... So, any ideas on how that would be replaced or switched or ..... how does the keyless entry remotes get handled in a re-key.
Thank you guys for the help!

Getting the car a new ignition and key should not effect the keyless (alarm??). Great job on the wheel locks. Too many times on the Discovery Channel show "It Takes a Thief" the theives will grab keys and take the car. A quality alarm install would be on my list and should not devalue the car. PM user: wrx-eater-sti-killer. At the same time I would upgrade your current security on the house and garage. An alarm(with backup battery), more home/garage security would be my top priority. For OEM replacement parts call Son's Acura. Len can take care of you.

i would keep the car somewhere else or make your garage/car 100% locked down in every way possible, or move all together. try and keep another vehicle infront of the door etc
Hi there,
thank you for the reply.... I think I was not clear enough about the keyless entry...The keyless entry is not an alarm but a kill switch... It is the keyfaub(sp?) that is with the keys. Can this KE be re-programmed or would it or should it be replaced.
OR
Upgrade to a full fledged Alarm system...?
O.... does anyone know how much a re-key cost?...
this fricken sucks... the thought of re-keying Miss R... My Japanese Geisha will not be the same...
I should not whine this whole thing could have been a lot worse.

Re-key is around $300 OEM from the dealer. This will also include a set of keys and should not devalue the car at all.
Another suggestion is get an alarm, especially living in Cali. While the person(s) who broke into your house might not be interested in the car, their friends are and those types of people most likely talk/brag about their recent activities.
GL man.

Thats not necessarily true.... Once the locks have been re-keyed, you can never get a key cut to your VIN again. That, IMO, would decrease the value of a collector car.
<not saying the itr is a collector car.

Bah! this happen in my city? Hit up desmond and have him stealth an alarm unit and also put in a GPS. Then visit mitico.com and buy a government issued wheel boot. Layer the hell out of it. Then take a look @ this site http://www.centinel.org.uk/clutch_claw.php and order yourself one of them clutch claw.
Lol, people thought I was crazy doing all of this for my R. But it kept my R safe for 2 years of daily driving and parked outside in the streets of east side Long Beach.
PS - don't worry about my revealing which part of Long Beach I stay @. I already moved

You can always hold onto the orginal locks and reinstall them in 30 years if you want it to be at the point that a dealer could cut a key (if they even do that in 30 years from now).

Hi Gang,
THANK YOU!... I will keep the original key set but install more security features.
All of you should know this.... She will be kept original and never out of my site for the sake of the tuner revolution and the car that basically started it all. I will keep her original for all of us to appreciate 15...25...40 years from now. AND when the ITREXPO comes back to California I will be there!...PROMISE!
Thanks again for all of your ideas and advise,

Any burglar who returns to the same house twice is an absolute idiot. It just doesn't happen... Who the hell would risk that?
I'd say get your other set of keys and secure your house. Your security problem isn't with your car (hell I'm surprised you locked the car down in your garage), its with your home security. Get good locks, a loud dog (mine's small but sounds fierce!), and consider a security system for your house.
I don't understand why people value a CAR over a home. Hell, I would rather my car get stolen than even just a few items from my house. Insurance doesn't cover sentimental. An R is sentimental, but it's just not the same as a vintage guitar collection or rare art pieces. :D

Unfortunately there are idiots like that out there. My friends garage got broken into twice within a week!!!
