Default Rota Paint FLAKING off!! Anybody else?

So my Rota C8's in Full Royal Sport Bronze have been on for about 1.5 seasons cumulative (11 mo total?) and I notice that my paint keeps peeling/flaking off. It looks like there's barely any paint on there before it reaches the bare metal! It's so thin that when I checked it out using my fingernail, even more flaked off.

I talked to JLB and they said that they've heard many complains about this problem and even brought this paint issue up with Rota.

Does any body else have Rota's with paint flaking off??

There are some spots where rocks have hit the wheels and obviously paint will be missing, but there are some larger sections where there's no damage to the actual surface of the metal, it's just there's no paint there anymore.....here's what I'm talking about:

haha yeah, it'll have to get much worse before I decide to strip them. I'm thinking maybe polished?

I always remind myself...this is why I got Rota's. I can curb them and not want to punch myself in the ***** for it.

I have the same wheels as you and mine are the same way. The flakes are in the same spots as yours. Some of mine are about dime size. I talked to JLB and they said the FRSB is the worst paint finish. The card board shipping box even rubbed paint off of mine. Is there any touch up paint that is close to this color?

yeah seriously, man! I got my wheels and on one of the faces, the paint rubbed off to the bare metal. I'm not sure, but Dustin said they've sent wheels back to Rota about it. Past the 1 yr warranty, i wonder if we can even pay them to respray them...and ask'em to paint it thicker this time.

I duno about any touchup paint for this color

We've been bringing the problem up to them continuously over the last few years. They are pretty good about replacing the wheels (because they know it's a problem), but they can't seem to fix the color issue. This is a pretty common issue with most Rota wheels, but it seems that just about every set of full royal sports bronze has this problem.

After seeing so many cases over the last couple of years we've made it part of our policy to inform every customer that requests this color that the "unprovoked flaking" will be an issue. Our company has received a number of sets with paint missing straight out of the box.

There isn't any touch up paint for this color, because the bronze is actually a clear coat "tint" to give an anodized look. That's why you'll also notice that the color isn't usually 100% consistent from wheel to wheel.

True as that may be, they should still not be held with as high of a regard if they have bad paint quality when there are superior wheels at a better price. If they have a problem, they should fix it.

Wow, I'll have to take a look at this Sport Bronze Mod....or just take Dustin/Hikaru's advice next time! Dustin/Hikaru at JLB are good guys and I'm still glad I purchased from them. They put in a ton of effort to satisfy each customer, I know because they solved an issue early on when I first got my wheels. I'll probably purchase from them again in the future because they support their operations 100%.

Too bad I didn't hear anything about this paint issue when I bought them, oh well. Just gotta let it go. The car's gonna turn into a dedicated track/autox car in the near future anyways and you can't expect perfect apperances when you're racing

If you've had them over 4 years you probably have regular sports bronze. Regular sports bronze isn't the same color and doesn't have quite the same issue (although the outer lip is the same, so you might notice something on the outer lip only.

The new color is Full Royal Sports Bronze, sometimes referred to as "Sports Bronze Mod" or just "Sports Bronze" now, which creates some confusion.

Thanks man. We're not in business to talk people out of wheels (if we were, we wouldn't make any money), but we do try to provide our knowledge and experience to everyone. Sports Bronze Mod is the same color, so it's going to have the same issue. In fact I've received some "Sports Bronze Mod" lately that were flaking straight ouf the factory box from Rota.

im not sure why you keep selling them, if there is a problem?

I dont sell the sports bronze for the same reason, it might look pretty but if its going to cause the customer bother, why even sell them?

We sell them because there is still a segment of the market that demands them. Even though we offer higher quality alternatives, we don't deny the customers the option to buy them based on our experiences / tastes for the wheels. I inform every single customer of the problem, and if they still insist on buying that color, we will accommodate them.

I've been encouraging customers with problems to make more posts like this to reduce the aura around these wheels and let people know that certain colors do have problems, and that is not just the dealer trying to talk them into another wheel.
