Evo makes it to Canada.. Hurray!
Well I was considering picking up another Type R.. There are a couple for sale out here in Abbotsford at one of the dealers. Nice cars and it was great driving one again.. but..
I just found out that the new EVO X is available in Canada.. They brought in a few late january. I must have been asleep, cause I only found out last week. There are not many, maybe 30 for Canada to start.
One of them is now sitting in my driveway.
So If anybody out here needs a nice family car, my 03 Altima v6 5 speed is for sale..
Yahoo!!!!

woo congrats on the purchase!! would be nice to give us a run down of the overall experience and impression of the car along with some photos!!! enjoy it im sure its a serious bit of kit
Ya nobody up here recognizes the car.. I'll bet there are less than 30 in Canada and they are all 5 speeds, we don't get the auto til August ( not that I'd want one..)
Mine is the silver color.. Couldn't get a red or blue one, and we don't do black.. still the silver is nice. Car looks a million bucks.. way better in person than in a photo.
Quality wise the 03 Altima beats it hands down.. Better fit and finish, nicer touches, Nissan has Mitsubishi beat. The EVO stereo is marginal, minimal adjustments on the seats ( no seat tilt, so you can't adjust your bolster.. bummer ), no telescoping steering wheel, so get used to stretching.. But what the hell, it goes around corners like nothing I have driven.. Obviously nice and flat, and so far I haven't even come close to hanging the rear out, even being stupid..
Still, it's going to take a bit to really learn how to drive this properly. I should get it on a track this summer.
Suspension is not too rough at all, but the car changes direction with a minor twich. I need to get used to that again, same as I did with the R. I thought the bottom end would be really soft, but power starts building early, like at about 2500 rpm, and really comes on at about 3-3500.. Fabulous torque, pulls up hills way better than the R, and way better than our Altima, which was no slouch with 250hp and a 5 speed..
Oh and the brakes.. hmm yes well.. looks like Brembo's for my Escort, cause the brembos on this car are something else. The car hauls down so fast it strains my seat belt, and the effort required is almost nothing. After one ' test ' stop from about 60 I actually got a little queasy.. the force was that much! So it stops and handles.. but does it go?
This column of the report gets a fair rating..
Car is still new ( 700 kilometers on it..) but the manual only has a 500k breakin, so I have wrung it out a bit..
Thing pulls great up to about 5 grand.. not enough power to spin the wheels by far, but very nice.. It might spin them if you launch like a maniac, but I'm not willing to try that just yet. Super power for passing.. leave it in the next gear up from what you would think and let the turbo launch you.. The thing is so quiet you tend not to notice that you are tripping along after your pass at 150 KPH.. I'll have to keep my eyes open for the police...
But the bad news for me is that the car falls flat after 5 grand.. It winds to the 7K redline, but takes a while.. all the time hesitating and missing a bit.. 1st gear is not so bad, but the rest are all bad..
To be fair I asked the dealer what octane to run, and they said they use 91 on all the Evo's they get.. The manual lists dire warnings about power delivery with anything less than 93. I still have a quarter tank from new so I'll up the octane and see what happens before I head back to the dealer.
Overall, even with the power limit of 5 grand, I think this is the most fun car that I am going to get for the money, and am pleased as punch with it. It drives sooo nice, and big torque is where it's at for sure ( 300 ft lbs @4000 rpm is pretty cool )Unlike the R though, I am going to see what tuning bits come out and pick the best way to get the power up..
Oh and as for the British cars, I got the Cortina in Canada, as they were sold here, but I got the BDA for it out of England. The Escort came out of England as well. The Escort is much like the EVO, in that the factory pulled the shells aside and sent them to the AVO (Advanced Vehicle Operations ) to be seem welded and gusseted, turreted and then to get all the go fast stuff installed.. Enough of them were sold to the public so that they were legally a production car and could be ralleyed as such.
They still are one of the most successful ralley cars in history, and are still competitive in historic racing ( read still hard to beat..) Mine is one of about one in Canada, and is converted to LHD and street use.. I think there are 6 or 7 other ones on race tracks in the States, but I only personally know of three of them.
If I could post pics I would But I never have figured it out for this forum

i would definately be running it on highest octane avaliable no secound doubts.. this may be the reason for the restriced power.. ecu/timing playin factor here??.. burn that fuel driving softly and get some of the best into it then drive it hard
imo silver is better looking than the other 2 colours avaliable.. find some nice work bronze wheels to set it off! have fun!

Well we've burned off the first tank and gone through half a tank of 94 Cheveron... Same performance.. Really bucks under load over 5 grand or so.. So it's off to the dealer tomorrow for sure!
with so many electrics and advanced ecu's hopefully its a small issue like O2 sensor or something, usual faults with new cars these days for some reason, keep us informed and good luck
Nice pick up lotus
. I have been thinking about making this move as well. I would LOVE to go for a spin in your new car. I sat in one at the auto show but that's it. I really like the design. I'm located in Richmond and would love to buy you a Starbucks for a quick spin

Well you know us Canucks have to stick together.. I'd have no problem with that..
Not sure when I'd be in Richmond, and I'd certainly have to sort out how the car runs with the dealer first.. But otherwise that would be fine!
You know if you can't trust a Type R owner...you can't trust anyone!
