just got bak from acura.... help..
Ok, so I went to acura this morning to have my car inspected, and of course there was an assload of stuff needed to be done, I just bought the car from a private owner,an older couple,so the car was taken care of.took it to acura to get a checkup just to see what I was workin with before I did anything to it. Here's a summary, vtec solenoid was leaking, I have an exhaust leak, need a new b pipe, abs light was on,tech said I need a new modulator and acumulator, and I need a power steering rack. Do I need to buy a new v solenoid or should I just replace the gasket, and are there any fairly priced sites to buy the parts I need online? What would u guys reccomend? I need to replace upper/lower radiator hose too, they wanna charge 370 for that ,lmao, but help....
I'm get samco radiator hose for around 90-100$
Just Clean up the VTEC solenoid with brake parts cleaner and replace the gasket..
Fix the exhaust by going to the muffler shop (save $$$ or if you plan on modding the car buy a nice catback)
All oem parts online..

Thats actually not that bad for Acura... can you do it for less.. yes. But are you capable of doing it? You can certainly try, but just remember that if you mess anything up its going to cost you twice as much to fix it.
Well I did want to get new parts but I just wanted to see if I could find them cheaper, the guy at acura was pretty cool,he saud if I bought my own parts in they could throw them on,as long as I had everything, guess ill be going through acura.

If you want to save some $$$, you can get a cheaper radiator hose from NAPA or something that was still made for your car. Usually cheap parts suck, but I bought some $12 dollar radiator hoses there once and they seemed to be fairly legitimate.
As far as the ABS, I've had two hondas on which the ABS didn't work correctly, and you need to ask yourself: How important is it that you even have ABS? Keep in mind that a lot of Hondas made in those years didn't even come equipped with it! Personally, I would take it out to clean up the engine bay a bit
but that's just me!

I drive without it. But, if you get a lot of snow and you drive in snowy weather a lot. I would recommend keeping it.

Thanks for the input guys,I thought having my abs light on would cause them to fail me. mayoforlife I see u live in annapolis md, I live in columbia md, this is my first emissions I've ever had to go through what do I need to look out for?
yeah my abs hasnt worked since i got the car, and im in no hurry to figure it out. my ABS modulator is attached to my left leg.
and that will have nothing to do with emissions.
as for the exhaust problems, if your going to be wanting any kind of power out of the car, your gonna want a header and catback. then you wont have to worry about any leak or b-pipe.

Well of course, I just don't want to install anything until I'm through with emissions, trust me I have a few shopping carts and im so ready to place all of my orders for parts, its crazy.I've just never had to go through emissions before so I reallu don't know what to expect.
So the car already passed the MD safety inspection? What dealer did you take the car to? I recently moved out here to Baltimore and need to get my car inspected so I can register it.
Like everyone else said, most of the stuff can be done pretty cheaply. Just the ABS stuff that will be the most expensive. There are a lot of people who get rid of ABS and a lot of times people do it just to clean up the engine bay and save weight. Sometimes its just more cost-effective to get rid of ABS than to repair it.
They said you had a bad steering rack, not just a bad tie rod or something else? I think the car should be able to pass emissions test with header and exhaust just as long as your catalytic converter and o2 sensor and still good. The previous owner of my car was able to pass emissions with DC headers and Apexi exhaust.

pass, haha no i failed my inspection miserably, he said i had a hole in both boots. hopefully all of the simple things will be fixed in the next week or so, i know i can go somewhere and pay to have them pass me for the inspection but wouldnt that be pointless if im gonna go through emissions, i just have no clue on what they check for, how much of the above would have to do with me passing or failing emissions? ^ i took my car to the acura dealership in laurel, tishcer acura, rite now i'm only on my temporary tags until emissions, by the way do you guys meet up or anything?
You shouldn't have any problem with emissions in MD except maybe for the exhaust leak. You have a 96, so they just hook up to the OBD-II port and do the readings from idle. You won't have to go on the rollers or pass a sniffer.
As for the inspection, obviously your better off fixing everything, but you can find places that will pass you.

I'm really not sure what they look for in terms of emissions, but I'm sure it is much better then when I was in CA. I am under the impression that for emissions, as long as you pass the snifer and your ECU doesn't throw error codes you should be fine.
Everyone just tells me the safety inspection is a pain. I haven't had a chance to meet up with anyone since my car isn't registered yet. I need to get temp tags so I can go and try to get it inspected. Let me know how everything goes and what to expect.

I just bought a '94 ls and my abs light is on too, i'm not sure if they care for that on emissions or not though? I don't really know what to expect for CA, i've never had to go thru emissions myself, should I also go to acura and get it inspected?
hahaha brakes have NOTHING to do with what kind of gasses are coming out of your exhaust pipe. And nobody at any emissions place is going to be like "oh man, there's a yellow glow coming from your dashboard, your dashboard" unless its the check engine light... which would show up on the emissions test.
^Haha, no cel , thank god,^^ personally I would take it to acura since u just bought it just to see how your car is doin and to see what shape its in,that's what I did.^^^ I'l def let u know what to expect!
Your ABS light should NOT cause you to fail inspection or emissions. I'm a licensed inspector in PA and theres no way I could fail a car for that. And I'm pretty sure MA is the same way.
The reason shops cost so much is the labor, not the parts. So you have to ask yourself if you can do it yourself without any worries or if you need a professional to do the work for you.
