Cool down time after some hard runs at the track
How much time is advisable to let the boosted car idle after some hard runs at the track. Should I rely on when the oil and water temperature had lowered down to a certain point or a preset time is suffice?
i usually turn my fan on at the end of the run, drive it back down the return road to my trailer, and that is usually enough time to drop ~ 15* for me. thats all i ever do
i would usually let it idle for a few min in the pit lane with the hood up, heater blasting and a/c on so the fans are on constantly.
the coolant temps are not usually a problem to control it's the oil temps that take a while to come down.....especially if you dont have a oil cooler.

Thanks. Do you have a switch to manually turn the fan on?
Louie, thanks. When you say few mins? How many or does it matter when it's too long? Also, how much drop of oil temp or at what oil temp is it safe to turn the car off then?

im not sure about your setup but mine really puts the heat to the oil. i do not have a oil cooler but i do have a oil temp gauge. i can only get about 7-10 laps around the mosport ddt track and my oil temp is close to 290-300deg.
it can take up to 5min (or more) of idling before the oil temp will move down to around 200-210deg which is still on the hot side but better than letting the oil in the turbo cook @300deg if you just shut it off after a min.....

my thing was to always take a slow coast. If your at the track, a slow drive down the pit and idle is great. If your on the road I personally like to drive the last few miles very slow not using to much load so I have a little wind resistance to help the cool down. then idle for a short time, That method works great for me. Gets oil temps down faster then just stopping

I have an oil cooler. I was able to run for 15-20mins at Dunnville before the oil temp will reach to 110-115C, but according to few other individuals that I've spoken to, they said that the oil temp is very high. I'm using 10W60 synthetic oil. After the cool down lap, it would go back down to 90-100C.
One thing that is weird is that the oil temp will only go up that high after pushing this long and after taking some high-g corners. Once it`s back on the straights, the oil temp will drop to around 100C
Wow Louie, 290-300C is insanely high. Isn't that like 150C? That's so scary. What oil are you using?

Yup, I always do a warm up and a cool down lap. After that, I would still leave the car idle for few mins. I just wasn't sure if I was overdoing it. Is it bad to let the car idle too long?

I think your thinking about it too much, just do what seems normal. you don't have to be Over the top
