Ghetto Splitter...version 1 complete see pics
Most of the R-speed NYC crowd know that I should not work on my own car. I can do "stuff", but attention to detail is just not my talent. So, in life I always deal with the following equation:
Lack of Attention to Detail + Lack of Proper Tools - Hate spending money = GHETTOFAB
The following are pics of my last Ghettofab project. But first the story:
I really, really like the MLR Motorsports air dam / splitter / mounts. I am unfortunately dealing with a very limited budget. So, I decided to by their mounts ($125) and fabricate the rest. I thought about buying an ebay air dam for about $100.... nah, why buy one when Home Depot is around the corner !!
Yes, Home Depot !!! I bought some sort of roofing flashing material.... I have no idea what it is but it cost about $12 for like 10'. I then bought the hardware and some thick metal "T". Total cost with paint (I didn't use it) was about $40
Also, went to a sign shop and bought a type of Alumicore ($100 for a 4' X 8' sheet). This sheet makes two splitters and some left over for whatever for about $100. Therefore, say one splitter is like $40.
The fabrication ran into some snags. My main issue is that the stock air dam is now NOT connected in the middle and only on by friction. I have pressed down on it and it stays, but we'll see
So basically, for about $200 you have version 1 of Ghettofab splitter/airdam. I already have some ideas for version 2. Oh another thing, I think a crack head's hands are steadier than mine when it comes to cutting with a saber saw!
Enjoy:

I have a track day next weekend, we'll see. My concern is that it is too functional and I need some downforce on the rear... if this is the case.... wait until you see my idea for a Gurney flap !!! This involves Home Depot and probably some sort of glue. lol!!

I think Version 2, may be using some small angles to hold the splitter to the air dam. Also, I may use a flat sheet for the air dam as oppossed to the angle flashing that I am using now.
Then, I think Version 3, may try and be more of a copy of the MLR so I can leave the splitter in place and add/remove the air dam seperately.
There design and work is FAR superior to what I have and I don't wan't to plagiarize what they spent a lot of time developing. So, if I had the money (which is honestly not much, I just don't have it), I would buy their product.

Haha well no worried on Home Depot ideas man...I built a radiator support with similiar aluminum sheeting for my build now with parts from there. I also am building a bracket to hold my FPR, vaccuum block, and oil block with parts from Home Depot lol. Sometimes ideas work out for the best man.

In the two middle pics you will see my red duct tape and there are tons of zipties all over the car. I built the car in a hurry in 2003 for HC and just started cutting stuff!
Now that I have time, I will slowly go through the car and clean it up.
Paint the splitter and airdam black or just the splitter?

lo-buck approved
you can paint it but be aware that if there is ever alot of debris (sand, gravel, speedy dry) in a high speed place on track, the paint will come right off.
see my splitter after comp school at pocono long with some speedy dry on the back straight

Alumilite is great stuff and seems to work well.
Thanks for the support!

My splitter is attached to the Home Depot section of the airdam with T's. The HD section is shaped like a "L". The vertical section is screwed into the stock air dam and the horizontal section is where the splitter attaches.
Success !!!
Well, success in the fact that I did a track day and the splitter/air dam didn't fall off the car.
I cannot tell if the splitter/air dam provided any added performance benefit because I am running new tires and new tire size.
