u can use freeze12, the substitute for r12. it is just as cheap as 134a, but i think u have to go to a place like kwik kar, or somewhere they can do it.
to convert to 134a, u really want to replace the condenser, dryer, etc. since r12 and 134a are totally different, the r12 that is in the dryer and crap, f***s up the system with the 134 in it.
try freeze12 first, it worked for me, but i had a bad leak in the compressor

Actually, you only need to make sure the system with R12 in it is evacuated and that the R12 oil is removed. Then get a R134a conversion kit (new o-rings, high nozzle, low nozzle, compatible oil) and fill the system with R134a. They sell the conversion kits at auto stores and they are fairly cheap.
Just make sure you have a professional evacuate the old R12 from the system...that stuff is bad for the environment.

I'm going to take my 89 in for AC work before the real heat gets here. I'm waiting on the gov'ment stimulus money woot!

Removed my AC last week in the CRX. It was starting to lose oil all over the ground.
Luckily the daily driver is still blowing strong, the CRX is pretty much for mild weather and autox only now.

Why dont you guys just use the proper r12, it is still made and works much better and gets much colder than the r134. Why convert? You cant buy it at autozone but a place that does ac's can get it and install it for you.

they actually dont manufacture r12 anymore. the clean air act that went into effect in jan of 96 banned the manufacturing of r12.
u can still buy it, for about $100 a pound due to it scarcity. but usually around here (dallas/ft worth) u cant buy r12 at places like autozone. it has to be ordered by a professional.
i agree, r12 is colder than 134. that is what i will use when i replace my compressor.
