Default In the market for a 5th Gen Finally!!!

So I found a deal I think is really good. A 2000 Honda Prelude base pearl white for $6700 w/ 95K the guy is the original owner and he said the timing belt and water pump was changed 15K ago even though he misplaced the reciepts
This is his description of the car:

"Original owner, non-smoker, pearl white 2000 Honda Prelude. 95,000 Mls., 5sp, looks and runs like new. New tires, tinted windows, needs nothing. Very clean inside and out, interior looks and smells like new. Small dent in rear quarter panel, barely noticeable.

Car is located right off rt.287
$6700 OBO
NO RESONABLE OFFER FEFUSED "

I’m going to check it out this Saturday
How much should I offer him?
What should I check for?
Any known recalls for this year lude?

Thanks guys

If it's any help, mine was up for $5500 firm, I offered $4800, he sold it to me for $4900.

It all depends on the person though. The gentleman selling selling the car also had a brand new 5 Series parked next to it though.

not bad. If you can get him under $6, go for it. I sold my '97 with 125k with some goodies for $6k a few years ago

If you offer that guy $5k flat, he's going to laugh at you. Thats almost $2k less than he's asking.

The first thing I'd ask about is the timing belt service. It should have already been done, if it hasn't been done yet, inform him that it is a $1k job at the dealer, then maybe he'd consider $5k.

If he has done the service, see where he had it done. If it was some random mechanic that did it, I'd be skeptical of the quality of work, and offer less.

Check the alignment on all the body panels, look for wreck-like damage anywhere. Check to see if lights and windows have been replaced (with non-honda parts), check the driveway where its parked for leaks, etc.

Find something wrong with it first, then offer him $5k.

If you can't find anything, offer him $5700, thats $1k less, then I think he'll settle for $6k.

Good luck. Car looks nice

It would most likely be bolt on so it would be easy to remove yourself.

That's pretty bogus. If he goes to the dealer the job was performed at, they can give him a copy of all the service work done on the car. If you're capable of doing the tbelt/h2o pump job, that'll increase the cost of the car a bit if he's not already done it.

and as we all know its not the timing belt that gives out first , just the tensioner in most cases.

You're right. And the dealer probably reused the tensioner.

I would buy that if it was closer. I paid $6600 for mine two years ago with 140k miles on it, not to mention mine is auto.

My 98 base model just clocked 137k and it runs like a champ. I need to adjust the valves but other than that it's great. Is it an auto or a stick?

you should know the rule of thumb is 12k/year around major cities and 15k/year everywhere else is the average. Will you have another lude by the May tri-state meet?

And stop looking on craigslist. If you want a clean car, look elsewhere and pay top $.

While I agree that there is some ridiculously shitty stuff on craigslist, often you can find some very good deals on there. I wouldn't rule it out completely.

Definitely can't rule it out, but maybe it's just worst for civics and tegs.

You could by an EG or EK and find out later that it had over 10 different motors in it and find holes all over the place.

If ever I were to buy another lude, I couldn't buy it from someone who beat on it or modified it. It's like buying a used mattress.
