Default @@@ code 17. (vss) @@@

ok this saturday i had a friend put in my alarm (wrx sti killer). my battery died and it would charge. it was my alternator. Everything was fine until i started to drive. check engine light. when i got to my other homies house (fourthgenb17a) we went over the problem. unplugged the cluster again and re-plugged the cluster and cleared the ecu. went and drove it again and there was the check engine light again. my friend told me he think the cluster is bad and to just get a new one from the junk yard. but to first check someone elses cluster in my car to see if it was the problem. so before i go to the junk yard and do all that does anyone have an idea of what it could be? thanks

is your tach lead going back to the ecu hooked up? it will throw a code if the computer isn't able to register your speed

i went to pick a part today and bought a new cluster for 50 dollars. came home and swapped it out. cleared the codes and everything was fine. so i haven't had any problems other than my idle be a little weird when i come to a stop.
