Default CRX side molding removal?

Really quick....I want to remove the side molding on one of my CRX to put onto the my other CRX (both 91 not sure if it matter)how do I do this without damaging the clips? Only screw I got off was the one closest to the door, on the inside.....so I got one end off? just not the front or the part by the fender....

I tired earlier today but couldn't figure out how to....I heard you had to remove the inner door panel first, which I did but couldn't get any further cuz I got stuck on the window crank handle which I didn't want to brake.....so how do I do this? TIA for the help I did do a quick search for "side molding/molding" but didn't find anything I was looking for.....

I just took mine off of a 89 hatch. Even if you take the inner door panel off you can't get to the clips. It looks like they are made to slid to the front of the vehicle and supposedly come out that way. Thing is the clips are two different pieces...one on the molding and one to hold that clip on the door. Well the piece on the molding just slides down the molding so the sliding thing doesn't work.

I think the only way to get them off is by breaking the clips....I still haven't checked to see if the clips are still available, but I'm pretty sure they are.

Yeah once I took off every screw from the inner panel but the window crank handle I just kind of looked at it and said how would I even get to the clips just looking down the glass window gap....

so once I get that screw holding the one end off which I did I then just have to slid/break the clips to get the molding off? I really don't want to do this unless it's the only way...anyone else on this?let me know.....

Well the way it's designed is for you to be able to slide the molding forward (maybe a half of an inch)and have the clip on the molding stay stationary and the clip in the door separate from that one. Unfortunately the clip on the molding doesn't stay stationary, least it didn't on mine. So you might try that method but I imagine your going to have the same problem I did & have to just break them.

Look in the 'my project' thread by 91ed9 to get and idea of what missing/smooth side molding would look like (his white car).

is it in the thread somewhere? I went through the whole thing looking at pictures( where there might be molding removal etc.) but didn't really see anything, because his CRX is shaved so he's got no moldings?....

Sorry...I misread your initial post (you can lynch the newbie!). I thought you were asking how it would look without the moldings...I apologize for that.

To take the clips off, you really need a panel puller tool. You can also use 2 screw drivers. Get a shop towel to prevent you from damaging the paint, and pull the molding out, starting at the rear (because itll be loose from taking the nut off) and locate the first clip. Using the shop towel to protect the paint, slide the screw driver down until it hits the top of the clip. The slide the second screw driver up from the bottom until it hits the bottom of the clip. Then pull the molding out again, holding the lower screw driver with your knee or something, and pushing down on the top one until you feel the little clip pop out. Then do the same thing for the bottom one, but dont let the molding go back tight to the body before you get the bottom clip out or you have to start over.

Its way easier with a long thin panel puller tool since you can snag both ends of the clip at the same time and just pull it out.

You can also just rip the panel off and break the clips, but i wouldnt recommend it, theyre expensive as [freak]. I just bought 8 from honda and it cost 22 bucks. Its about the same online, i think theyre are 1.50 a clip from hondapartsdeal.com.

And you cant get to them from inside the door, unless you cut a hole and took out your impact bar.

^^ thank god somebody chimed in with the right answer! Now I don't have to type as much

I've taken off quite a few side protector pieces this same way and only broke a few clips but they were very brittle anyway. Something to keep in mind is the clips come WITH the side protector when you purchase new from honda so If you need new clips price out the molding first as it may not be much more money......another problem with that is the pieces are becoming discontinued @ the dealer, I just ordered a brand new set for a 91 CRX and the driver door is NO LONGER available! pissed me off for sure since I have yet to locate one thats not bent.

...damn, I guess I typed a lot after all

I just ordered both sides from majestic 2 weeks ago and I got the driver side. You might want to check with them. I wish I had known the clips came with the molding because I ordered both, so now I have extra clips. Which I guess can be a good thing!
I just wish the lower molding wasn't so expensive to replace.

It will not look good with shaved moldings, the bumpers will have the same molding and it will look dumb as hell with shaved side moldings and stock bumpers. You'll also likely see cracks down the road where the filling goes, since the body flexes so much it will eventually stress crack that area that would already like crap................. now painting your moldings is a different story, that actually looks good and can hide imperfections with ease if needed. just my 2 cents

I agree about the shaving bit....my friend has a hatch with shaved moldings(how he bought the car) and the filler is cracking and like VtecSyndrome said it looks weird as hell cause the bumpers have the molding.

Man you gotta be kidding me. I only didnt order the moldings because i didnt want to spend so much money, and i didnt have any clips but i still had my bent molding. So i just ordered the clips. The moldings only like 25 bucks and the clips were 22!! I could have gotten both, that sucks.

Well as far as the shave molding I was only thinking about it...but true on what you guys said...painted moldings I say only looks good in certain color REX...like black But with two rex I kind of want to make one a bit different from the other...but I'll see....

no haven't gotten the REX back form the shop yet still having surgery done...so haven't been able to try and take out the clips/modlings yet

I'll be one of them damn you j/k anyways I'll try to tackle the skirts after I get the moldings off when I get her back ...REX is originally from AZ to WI so I want to check up on rust other than roof and a spot on driver molding side...but for most part almost rust free...quarters are clean still

BTW do you just pull straight out on the crank handle? when I first try removing the whole panel I didn't want to break it or anything so I left it and came on and post here

look at where the handle attaches to the panel, you'll see the C-clip in there, push on it with a flat head, it'll pop off and you can slide the handle off with ease.

another picture to get you motivated...

for $500, you couldnt get a complete set. not even close. multiply that by 3 and use my employee discount and you may be in the ballpark.

I find it easiest to use a rag and pull up and back and forth, and the clip will pop right out.

I might have to talk to you streetwerkz should I continue my restoration if I don't sell my sedan when I leave for military duty. You are gonna be at the EF meet though hopefully so hopefully I get to meet you then. I came up with $659.35 for my bumpers and mouldings on my sedan, but I may be missing some things since the pics and numbers are kinda hard to see.
