ok my si trany grinds second gear and third gear but only when i shift quick dosent matter if i have the clutch in for a while and shift it quickly it still grinds so heres the question fix it or replace it and how much does it cost to rebuld a transmission?

 

a trans rebuild can be costly and most people do not think it to be cost effective.

When was the last time you checked or replaced the trans fluid?

Sounds like a synchro problem, but most times adding clean fluid will work wonders(especially if the fluid was low). I swear by the gm synchromesh fluid myself now after using it at a board members recomendation.

$20 and less than an hour to change fluid is far more cost effective to try before pulling a trans for a rebuild.

 

Even if changing the fluid takes it away, it's onlya temporary fix. You have most likely worn your snychro teeth down from hard shifting. If you are willing to spend $250 or so, you can rebuild it yourself. Otherwise, just get a different transmission.

 

Mine grinds 3rd when I shift quick at high rpms, like 6k or so. Also grinds in reverse sometimes, been doing it for a while (year or so), I wish I could say I baby the car but that a lie.

 

You will have to consider the costs of rebuilding the trans. If you can find a decent one with low mileage and for a good price...it may be best to replace it.

If you are wanting to keep it OG...then have your trans fixed by a reputable place. Be prepared to spend at minimum 200-300 for a new 3rd sleeve and gear set...plus labor. Also if this is the case, it may be the right time to go in and replace all your bearings and seals while you are at it. That will add another 200 or so. But, it will give you piece of mind knowing that your trans has been freshened up and is ready to go!

 

I would bet that if you scuffed the 2nd,3rd and 4th gear cones, that you would not have an issue anymore, without having to buy any new parts. Either way, the transmission will have to be opened up and inspected in order to fix the problem. The synchromesh fluid is a great bandaid.. but the problem will only get worse until it is properly fixed.
