timing belt very loose...tensioner?
1997 civic dx b16a
well my car just started having this rattling noise yesterday night, i turned it off and checked it 2day and it sounded like it was coming from where the cam gears are. i looked further into it and found out the belt was actually starting to slide off and hitting the plastic cover (that was making the rattling noise). so i tried sliding it back on and it felt pretty tight, until i tried starting the car, it looked like the belt was jumping over itself and the car wouldnt start. now the timing belt is loose on the left side, and tight on the right for some reason. so what i was thinking was: is the problem the tensioner? or is it something else? and how would i go about checking/fixing it?
thx 4 the info guys
here r some pics

i couldnt get a clear shot of the inside/tensioner

Yeah, sounds like the tensioner is shot. You should probably replace it, as well as the timing belt itself. Be sure to properly tension the new belt after installation, as described in the service manual.
is there anything i could do to make it work temporarily? cuz im 90 mi away from home...and i gotta take 2 tests on tuesday (college). not to mention work. any ideas??
Unfortunately, with a bad tensioner and a damaged timing belt, you risk major engine damage. I recommend that you call a buddy for a ride home and, if possible, for a car tow.
