ACT clutch
Im looking for a new clutch for my LS tranny. I've never heard anything bad about ACT and have several friends who use it but this other guys swears up and down that it will jack up my tranny. He says Clutchmasters is better. Any thoughts?
ACT customer service rocks. My boy Joe ran a GSR at sebring and the car saw daily driven abuse and road COARSE abuse. He downshifted too high and threw a spring from the HD/SS disk... ACT mailed him a 6puck for free after 16K of abuse and he reinstalled it... chirped 3rd every time with about 170-175/125-130 at the wheels.
ACT is awesome they come reccomended as I have a HD/SS in my GSR with
an ITR flywheel.

Just make sure you get a sprung clutch. One without springs WILL trash your tranny. Mine has no springs and it made the bearings in my tranny the new springs.
Although Ive heard that clutchmasters just has a better product for about the same price.

About the only advice I can give is to not get the ACT Xtreme pressure plate. The Heavy Duty one is just fine for lots of street driving with some track events.
If the car is spends the majority of its time tracked, the Xtreme PP might be what you're looking for.
I only say this b/c the Xtreme PP feels like it's 3 times as stiff as the HD PP. Anybody who's driven both can vouch....unless you got calves like Lee Haney.

ACT definately!!! All of my friends run them and not one has gone out prematurely. I did a GSR swap for my friend into his EK and he went with a Clutchmaster, it just began to slip a couple months ago after only about 5 months. I really like the Xtreme pressure plate with a 6-puck disk, but some people don't. My friend just did a CRVTEC in his EK and he's running one of the new ACT Max Xtremes (I really like that clutch)!! He just ran it the other day and hit 12.8@106 ALL MOTOR. That's with like high comp JE pistons bored .50mm over, a portflow head with CTR cams, Skunk2 IM and sprockets, and 310 RC injectors. I was happy atleast!! Anyways back to the clutch I would just get an ACT.

I'm glad somebody posted this, i've got the ss disc and i saw a 6 puck unsprung on ebay for $90 and i though about buying it. But now i know why it was so cheap. I figured it had to be hard on the motor.

I read a quick article written by Rocket that had lots of tidbits on the Xtreme PP's.
The Xtreme PP using a diaphram finger thickness of 3.0mm instead of 1.8mm for other clutches. The fingers are also formed out of a metal that's much harder than the HD PP's.
Do a search under his username and you'll find it. Clutch 101 or something like that is the article.

I look at performance clutches like tires. If you want better performance, you have to be prepared to go through tires more often. So plan on replacing your clutch disc more often since the compound is designed to grab harder.
first and foremost, get sprung hub like ryan said, solid hub will make the lives for your mainshaft bearing sa short one...Make sure you consult with them on the material that will perform AND last to your expectations...for instance, clutchmasters stage 4 will not last long, but 3 is verydurable, so contact act and ask them what is to be expected for their product...
Do you know what ACT stands for? "Axle Crusher Tranny breaker" I know thats ACTb. Even though i've blown two differentials with an ACT 6 puck, i'll never go back to a street clutch. My SI Chirped in 4th easily with only bolt-ons on the B16...
everyone talks about chirp this chirp that, my bone stock, nothing cx civic with 80 some hp to the wheels, with a act 3 puck, used to RIP 3rd gear...and destroyed 7 transmission before i switched to sprung hub...with the sprung hub, ive went thru 2 and now am on that same tranny with my y8 build...
DUBNINE,
i illustrated the point that solid hub clutches will shock the driveline incessantly, eventually leading to premature and catastophic mainshaft bearing wear, differential damage (spider gears), etc.
i bleve a 80 hp car spinning the tires during a third gear shift is a vivid illustration of the brute engaging force that a pucked, solid hub clutch provides...
also i made an effort to counter your claim that ACT products are destructive, only when it is used for the wrong application ie. a full race cintered iron 3 puck disk for a daily driven abused street car with low hp levels...or any unsprung hub disk on the street for that matter. sprung hub disks have serviced our cars w/o a hitch, ranging from 11 second (soon to be low 10's) street turb c1 delsol (CM stage4), turb c1 teg (cm stage4, act street), and my juiced/built y7 and built y8, (cm stage4, stage2)

sounded like you were hating...
I was also trying to illustrate how good the clutch grabs, i wasn't trying to show how much power my motor was making, thats why i said that all i have are bolt ons...
I can't say that i didn't expect any damage by running a race disc in my street car...
