Default Tranny oil leaking...car stumbles and dies when put in gear.

Well, looks like my tranny problems just got a little worse. Yesterday when I was driving home I noticed my car shifting pretty roughly. I figured I just needed to change the fluid.

Later on that night, I started the car up and tried to reverse out of the driveway when all of a sudden I hear this weird clunking/screeching noise and the car just stalls and dies as soon as I let the clutch out.

I check under the car, and there's a puddle of fluid under the car. Looks like transmission oil. I then attempt to drive the car back onto the driveway. Although it didn't die this time in 1st gear, it still makes the same noises and stumbles the entire time it's in gear.

This car never had any tranny issues as far as I know. WTF could it be? Maybe it's just low on fluid? Or could it be a more serious problem?

Drain the trans fluid and see how much comes out. If it's trans fluid that's on the ground, sounds like it somehow leaked out and the transmission is seizing. Would explain why the engine stumbles (it can't turn) and also the screeching.

I'm planning on getting the car up on a lift and checking it out in detail. I just think it's just really strange how the tranny could be leaking like that all of a sudden. Also, do you think I could have caused any damage to the tranny/motor by attempting to move the car in that condition?

Your tranny could be leaking though the axle seals. Easy fix if you say your trans has never had prob's.
