Default autometer tach problem

i have a 1991 ef hatchback with a ls motor in it . i have had a automter 5" tach in it for a while with no problems. now all of a sudden the tach doesnt want to work right. when you start the car it goes to 3 grand and sits there. when u rev the car it barely moves then comes back down. i have checked all my wires and connections, and have no problems. i have the green wire to the blue wire on the distributor. im also running an msd external msd blaster coil, and msd cap. someone said that i have to hook it to my negative side of the coil. the stock tach on the car works fine, so i dont know what the problem is. can anyone help me with this?
