Default 92 civic dx wont shift into 5th gear? Auto...also speedometer bounces crazy!??!!?

SO I was on the highway today with my 92 civic 89k original motor....just got a tranny flush around 85k, and I think my car was not shifting into 5th gear(cruise gear) on the highway. I baby my car all the time...never floor it or anything. I did notice that when the speedometer bounces back... sometimes the car would downshift....

Wtf is going on? What do you guys think?

your gauge. most likely it's this chip behind the speedometer. get that replace. just the chip, not the whole cluster. not a big problem.

your tranny, check for clutch pedal free play and make sure your fluid is up and that when you step down on the clutch the fork opens all the way.

check these first before we can start.

umm, your title says "Auto"

so does that mean you have a Automatic Civic???

Civics didn't come with 5-speed automatic transmissions till 2006 i think...

but it does sorta feel like there is an extra gear change, when the torque converter locks up at higher speeds...

i'm not calling you silly or anything... just basing it on your title...

Isn't your automatic a 4 speed? Check your speed sensor, the ground might be messed up, or it maybe loose.

You dont have 5th if its auto. Not possible unless you did a tranny swap for a new tranny or something...

I have an automatic car, but it just felt like once I pass 55-60 that it kicks into another gear?

I dunno... but the weird thing was it was downshifting on its own.

Yeah it could be the torque converter locking up that makes me think their is a 5th gear.

I now understand why it says "D4" in my dash LOL

when speedometer is bouncing i say it's the chip located behind the speedometer. many will tell you it's the vss, but you can also check that first. barrow a spare from someone, see if that fixes it. but in my experience every time it bounces, it's the chip, when a vss goes bad it stops working all together.

the chip is easy replaceable, you do not need to change your original mileage at all. you just find a cluster from a 92-95 honda civic. does not matter what model or trim. you then remove the chip behind the speedometer and replace it with the one on your speedometer.

let me know if you need detail instructions. good luck.

vss is vehicle speed sensor... located under the intake manifold on the pax side, its a black lookin clip lookin from top that needs a 10mm socket to remove...

clip behind the speedometer req u to take out ur clustr and take it apart to replace the chip

Default Re: Speedometer problem 92 Civic

Hey I found this forum and I have this same problem. The Speedometer wasn't working hardly at all on the 92 Civic LX that I bought. I replaced the VSS and it now either works sometimes or not at all. It seems when I am on the highway that it works more or less but then registers about 5 mph higher than it should. Then when I start the car later it doesn't work at all and may start to work but still is intermittent. I want to see if I can get that chip for behind the cluster but it would be helpful if I had a part number or some specific name for it when I go to a junkyard and ask for "that chip behind the instrument cluster". Any idea what that part number would be? Thanks
