Default ONLY 17mpg on my 1999 accord ex 4 cylinder

this car has averaged only 17mpg only my highway and some city driving since I got it 4 months ago. I'm not heavy on the gas or brake pedal. the tire pressure is good. Could someone give me some suggestions? I get about 300 miles per tank on a 17 gallon tank and don't fill up untill the gas light comes on. PLEASE HELP! I can't keep spending $50+ to fill up every week.

that sounds about average haha, my car got about 300-350 when i first got it, it's a 94 accord lx.

have you changed air filters? spark plugs and wires? any kind of tune up when you got it? simple tune up can help. i'd also seafoam the car, that help me alot.

my car has an long ram intake, header, new plug and wires, hi flo cat and a cat back. then i clean out the TB, FICV, and seafoamed it, i average about 330-410 miles a tank now, big increase huh?

just try to clean out somethings and tune it up, you can free alot of miles up.

you don't actually run the tank til the light comes on then then fill up, take the miles driven and divide it by 17 for the tank size do you? If so, you are doing it wrong.

First, don't drive it until the light comes on, fill up sooner. As a general rule I fill up when I get to about 1/4 tank.

When you get gas next, fill it all the way up and reset the trip in the gauge cluster. On your following fill up, fill up all the way again. Now take the amount of miles you drove on that previous tank and divide it by the total amount of gas it took to fill the tank up. For example... 365 miles driven and 15.3 gallons of gas put into the tank would give you 23.9 mpg.

My 95 is being a gas hog too. I already pumped $40 this week and its gone!

The only thing I could do now is give it an oil change......oh well.

now since ultra low emission vehicle is better for the enviornment due to it having lower emission ... does that make the ulev vtec eng. better on gas than a regular a vtec eng.? ... just curious

i say its time for a full service tune up. the mileage will also change with a bunch of little stuff, tire pressure, weight in the trunk, pedal to the metal, etc

Replace the spark plugs (should be replaced every 30,000 miles on that car) as well as the wires unless the wires look to be relatively new. Replace the air filter. Make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Are there mods on the car? And I get around 27 to 28 mpg in mixed driving in my '99 I4 Accord, 33 to 34 mpg on the interstate (about 72 mpg).

And by any chance is your car a DX model? Those didn't have VTEC engines which, I think, would affect your mileage to some degree.

By the way, those cars are notorious for having inaccurate speedometers (will read high). The next time you are on the interstate, use a stopwatch to get the average time between miles while the cruise control is locked into various speeds. Divide the average time in seconds per mile into 3600 and you have your actual speed in miles per hour. My car reads about 4 to 5 mph high when I'm in the 70s (it'll read 75 when I'm doing 71, will read 80 when I'm doing 75). And it's not adjustable, it is what it is.
