98 Accord Tranny Replace. Should I do it or not?
I have a 1998 Accord EX 4cylinder VTec. It appears that the transmission finally went out on it. It revs up but don't go nowhere. Fluid level is good. Tranny has had issues for the past year or so.
It would take a second for it to go into gear when you stopped. It would give a little bump to let you know it was ready to go. If you stepped on the gas before you felt the thump it would really hammer when it did go into gear. Worked like this for a year. Now, it just revs but does not move.
Here is my question: Car has 212,000 miles. Engine runs perfect. I can get a tranny for about $500 that is out of a wrecked '02 model with about 75k on it. How hard is it to swap? Does it come out the bottom or does engine and tranny come out top together? Is it time for a new car?
Any input is appreciated.

thats a decision only you can make depending on your driving conditions and the way you drive but the trans can come out by itself and from the bottom and should be about a day job(it shouldnt take the whole day but give yourself a day)

212k miles! Damn. I'm suprised you still have the same tranny! By the sounds of it, it doesnt seem as though you are prepared to swap your transmission by yourself. I'd leave this to a professional.
The tranny disconnects from the block and would be pulled down from under your car.
As long as the 02 Accord had a 4cyl Auto, just like yours, you should be good to go!
Good luck

get ur hands on a haines manual, this will save a lot of time.
i just had to replace mine not too long ago... (manual trans)
and the whole sub frame needed to come out. they are not like a b series trans that has nothing in the way... took me 5 hours just to get it out by my self

The problem has mysteriously fixed itself after we let the car sit for the past 4 days. I spoke with a reputable transmission guy and he said that it was the internal filter being clogged. After the car sat the particles clogging would settle out. But, the problem would come back after the car warmed up. I really believe this is the case. It shifts as perfect as new right now which tells me that it is not something mechanical otherwise it would do it all the time.
Unfortunately the only remedy is a rebuild. The filter is internal and the only way to get to it is to disassemble the tranny (thanks honda!!!). What could be a 20 minute $10 job is going to be $1400. The tranny guy said that it only makes sense at that point to replace all worn parts and get it back to spec. which I agree with.
If anyone out there knows how to remove the particulates from the filter or fluid or somehow clean it out without removing the tranny PLEASE Let me know.
I'll keep you posted with my findings.

Just flush the tranny about 3x. Do it while the engine is cold. Drain, refill. drain, refill. drain, refill.
This should clean the clogged filter. I'd try that.

How do you flush it out? I have been told to stay away from transmission flushes.
Do I fill it, then drive it and then drain it? and repeat 3X.
You say to do it cold. Do you mean not to drive it and just let engine run a little before draining. It seems to me that you would want the tranny to run a while to really loosen up any stuff to be able to drain out.

after 212000 miles your trans would be dirty for sure. the trans fluid is almost always overlooked by the average diy car owner. id get it flushed by a shop and filter replaced. i once bought a 79 cady sevile with a 'bad trans' for 200 bucks. after a 6 dollar part from autozone it ran like new.
