i recently bought an 89 crx si with a ''japanese'' motor recently installed. the car runs like a bat out of hell and i am really impressed with it. i am having a few problems with it that i am hoping some of you can help with.
1- the fuel gauge is whacked, i filled it up and the guage moves all over. if i hit the brakes to slow down, the gauge goes to empty and returns a few seconds later. when i filled it the last time, it went all the way to the bottom and didn't come up until i put 100 miles on it and then it started working sporadically.
2- slight smell of gas in car-nothing leaking on motor that i have seen
3- idles rough when warm, clears up with burp of throttle and runs smooth for a few seconds and goes back to rough idle.
4- what is the motor that was installed, i was told it was a 1.6 ltr and has japanese writing all over it.
5- recently replaced the muffler and tailpipe on it, the old one was one of those really noisy types and i didn't want to draw attention. put a factory muffler and tailpipe on it and it is really getting soot'ed with black soot. is this normal? i use the car to drive back and forth to work which is 100 miles round trip, mostly highway stuff. on the highway- it is great, in stop-n-go traffic the idle gets to be bothersome.
i am used to driving a cummins diesel 4x4 and use this for driving to work and i am having a blast with it, i have named it ''zippy''. everything on car works, even got sunroof to work. any help would be appreciated.

its most likely a B16 motor, does it look like this


the fuel gauge problem could be the sender unit in the gas tank or your gauge cluster.

if you are smelling gas you have a leak somewhere.

black soot near the tailpipe is a sign of running rich.

is your CEL coming on?
