Automatic Transmission - Weird noise when shifting to drive
Hi,
I have a 1999 Honda Civic EX Auto Transmission.
I would just like to know if anyone here is experiencing a weird grinding noise everytime you shift the transmission from either Park, Neutral or Reverse to Drive.
It is just a 2 or 3 seconds noise after shifting to drive and stepping on the pedal. It's kinda annoying though...don't want to think yet that there is a problem in the auto transmission...

I had the same problem along with longer engagement time. Does it sound like a whir and click? Long story short, my first gear was completely gone and I needed to swap my transmission.
it's just a whir sound for 2 or 3 seconds everytime I shift to drive...how long have you been dealing with this before you had it swapped? same transmission? auto?
for how much did it cost you?

For me, it was a whir and click when you pressed the gas lightly to start moving. It started out one day and became to troublesome to bother after 3 months or so . A used transmission I sourced from criagslist that had 95k for $175.00
Bump for someone else to help out b/c it this may be something else then a worn tranny. Solenoids?

These transmissions do have a couple valve body springs that tend to break and cause shift issues
Sounds like you will need a replacement soon.

I recently had the car serviced by a Honda Dealer. All the fluids were changed including the transmission fluid using ATF-Z1. The mechanic told me that there is nothing wrong with the transmission. He test drive my car and the transmission shifts smoothly. He did not hear any grinding noise that I described to him whenever the gear is shifted to drive. I went home and the next morning I heard the noise again.
I went back to the dealer to have it checked once again. It was a 15 minutes drive. When I arrived there the same thing happened. I cannot replicate the noise to the mechanic. The mechanic cannot diagnose because he is not hearing anything...Is it because the engine is still hot when I drove my car from my place to the dealership?
Is anyone experiencing the same thing in their auto transmission when the engine is still cold?

I don't know if this is exactly what you are experiencing, but I thought I'd add to your thread.
1996 Civic EX coupe, ~200k miles
Intermittently, the car will emit godawful squealing sounds when moving to/from P/R/D (can't recall right off if this happens when moving into Neutral). I noticed that when this happens, the climate control fan doesn't blow either.
The only solution has been to turn the car off and restart. Then it's usually fine.
I have no idea what this means, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
