Default b18c vs. b18c

My buddy just recently got a eg hatchback with a b18c in it. He originally was told it was a jdm gsr, but now he thinks it is a type-r, b18c. Is there any way to distinguish the two apart?

look at the transmission
a 96spec type r will have J4D stamped to it
if its a 98+ spec type r will have N3E stamped to it

but there's always the possibility it could be a gsr engine with a type r tranny

also the gsr comes with the black valve cover and type r comes red. however there is another possibility that the valve cover was changed to a red one.

It's easy to determine a jdm gsr from a jdm type R by looking at the intake manifold.(unless the motor has an aftermarket intake manifold)..but if it's stock just look at the intake manifold. The type R manifold looks like a b16 while a gsr manifold looks like a upside down fruitcake.

disassemble the motor, if you see P73 and R stamped on the pistons, rods, and crank then you are good to go.

Well if its a JDM GSR it'll be fast, and if its a JDM B18C R it'll be really fast. What's it rev to?

If he "had a red valve cover but kept it and put a black one on" it would be a R. Tell him to show it to you. Only a moron would sell a car with a jdm B18C-R as a car with a jdm GSR.

To say the least, I think that if it was a JDM B18C then you would both KNOW it.

test the compression or remove the head, also what ECU is your friend using? that might give a clue as to what the engine is

So no PR3 on the head? Prob a GSR. I can't see why someone would swap a P72 over a PR3.

are you kidding me, a hatch with a standard B18C (probably a GS-R motor) keeping up with a 300bhp Evo?

So your saying.. a bolt on b18c hatch wont keep up with a evo??

I walk evo8/9's from a 20 punch all day.. i'm alottt more modded but still all motor..
evo's aren't fast.. i used to have a buddy who owned a bolt on one and i drove it.. alot..
at least down here bolt on gsr's motors in hatches are fast.. like.. 13.8 fast..

13.8 is fast?

But for real, f*ck an EVO, I can walk all over an EVO... An EVO VIII, with 4 people in the car, a burnt clutch, and a boost leak.

Now now.. before someone twist my words to make me look like an idiot or try too anyway..
13.8 at like 100+mph is quiet fast actually considering the motor really only has a exhaust, and intake.. otherwise everything else was stock.. Good driver on street tires cut a 2.0 60' I believe thats fast enough for a pretty stock car.. of course i live in louisiana.. so alttitude doesn't play a role down here like everywhere else
Lemme say again, evo's aren't fast.. it was my dream car for about 6 years until i drove one constantly because a good friend owned one.. to me its now like another car.. and it isn't fast.. they're overrated bhp anyway, they put down alittle over 240 to the wheels. after 80mph awd is ****.

yea i live louisiana too. and EVOs arent fast mid to high 13s stock. and 13.8 @ 100 is pretty quick. yea a stripped eg hatch with a gsr is pretty quick. it could easily hang with an evo. from a dig it would be hard but from a roll easy. where is a good tuning place in La?

Who tried to twist your words?

To which I responded:

No twisting. No attempts to make you look like an idiot... Just asking, "13.8 is fast?"

EVOs are cool cars, I would absolutely LOVE one for a daily driver. 4 doors, easy to drive, decent torque, nice styling, no need for an aftermarket seat so I can fit my tall *** in it comfortably. Perfect daily driver. Not to mention, with a few grand in parts, it can be an incredibly fun car to drive, on the strip, on the street, or around some turns.

I would not, however, sell my Type-R to buy one.
