I have rust repair panels on the way for my 93 civic coupe. I wanted to see if it is better to flange the quarter panel or to just butt weld the repair panel. I was thinking of getting this tool http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump...ODUCT , but didn't know if the flanged part would cause moisture to collect on the inside. Any thoughts?
i usually just do the flange type of deal but don't have tapered edges.. in other words the repair panel is inside the (insert body panel here) and i just fill in the little gap with bondo
I'm doing mine this summer and I was planning on flanging. East wood and harbor freight sell pneumatic flanger/punch tools, I rather use that than the hand version, I don't wanna spend any more time working on this than I have to.
heres a link to give you some insght as to what you may be up against.

edit, plan B was to at least have flanged tabs if I feel that flanging the whole thing may distort body lines or just be to much of a hassel.

yeah, I've read that write up. I have also searched some other write ups about that depending on where your doing the flanging, moisture may collect on the backside of the flange/ weld. I have also thought about if you were to flange the whole area it may distort the body lines like you said. Anyways, thanks for your input and I hope that this thread will help others if they're planning on doing this type of repair. Especially since the 5th and 6th gen civics are getting older and more are rusting out. That link that you posted is a great write up even though I doubt I would have put that much time into it. I am lucky that my coupe (255,000 miles) is rust free under the side skirts - although I will look into doing preventive maintance on that area.

Yeah I have though about that. Welding the whole outside panel thats flanged and then seam sealing the inside side could work. Or, if there were a sealer thats sandable that bondo/ect. could adhere to that would be a good solution. I'm not sure if such a product exists, like you said, I'm just a guy trying to fix my rust
