Default Damn black smoke...

I have a 98 B18C5 that smokes (black) at high RPM's and leaves a residue. Black means running rich so I checked a couple of things and found out that the thermostat was bad and the car was running too cold and it took too long to warm up. So i fixed that, changed the fuel filter and did the timing belt and water pump. The engine feels a lot better but I'm still getting some smoke. What else could be causing this problem?
Thanx

Worn piston rings most likely, or valve seals.

Wouldn't that be blue smoke?

Cat. No check engine lights if you're thinking one of the sensors.

son blk smoke at high rpm is not abnormal for any car. the fuel demand is high and at those speeds not all of the fuel is burned off or correctly.. if it is like a smoke screen then yes you have a issue

sigh

ALL standard cars will give out black smoke (unburnt fuel) at high rpm's

it's a Honda failsafe to protect the engine at high rpm's by overfueling a little. it's normal, stop worrying. I've followed brand new BMW 335i's that have done it even.

A small puff of black smoke that can only be seen by somebody behind you staring directly at your tail pipe when you go to WOT is normal. If you can see the smoke in the rear-view mirror, that isn't 'normal', though this is what generally happens to B18C5's over time...

You should see the epic black/blue cloud that follows my car after every WOT session.

I think a lot of it is the low-friction ring design on the C5. Mine started smoking at 45-50k miles. At 160k teardown, it was using oil bigtime, leakdown and comp. numbers were pretty bad (mostly on one cylinder) but the valve seals and guides were in good shape, so must of been the rings. And V-Tec surely adds to blowby. I ran Mobil 1 since break-in on the ITR.

For comparison I also ran Mobile 1 in a Gen 1 teggy that I bought w/50k miles and original owner had taken good care of. It burned 1/4 quart between changes.
At 200k it was burning 3/4 quart 'tween changes.
A grate lil' DD car.
(To affirm OG status, handling package I put on the Gen 1 teggy was Jackson Racing.)

Woot for Smoke

After returning my 97' to D-stock legal (no more header/testpipe), smoke is a lot less, but it seems to be expected with higher mileage Hype R's
