Default 97 Prelude H22 with H23 Block

I have a 97 Prelude with an H22 (ofcourse) 5 Speed all mostly stock. My trans is acting up lately and the engine is also starting to get a knock to it. It is not knocking very loud yet, but it is definitely a knock and will be loud soon.

I have found a 96 model prelude with an H23 5 speed that has been wrecked and still has a good trans and engine in it. The guy will take $500 for it, and I was thinking since the knock is in the block of my H22, I can replace my H22 block with the H23 block and keep my H22 head. Then bolt up the H23 transmission and be ready to go, right?

That would be the transmission fixed and the engine knock fixed also, correct? Should I take anything from my H22 block and put in with the H23 block? (pistons etc
Just wanting to know if this will work, and if it WILL, how would it affect my performance noticibly from what it is now? (pretty much stock performance level)

Current specs on car
97 Prelude 5 speed with stock H22
I/H/E, Aem Pulleys, Koyo Radiator
Ecu upgraded (redlines at 8,500)
I dont let it go past 7.5 sometimes 8k at most.
Thanks Everyone.

read the faq. Search.

All H/F series transmissions (excluding f20c) will bolt up to the H/F series blocks. The base h22a4 transmission will bolt up to an SH block but requires an adapter plate to mount the intermediate shaft.

Blake, it's the other way around. A base trans can be used with an SH block using an adapter.

To mate the trans itself to the block, you don't need an adapter plate in either case; the bolt pattern is almost identical. It's the atts unit/intermediate shaft that requires an adapter.

It's not an SH model, and the trans isn't the big issue here. The H23 trans should bolt up directly to the H23 block thats going in anyway.

My main question is:
Just wanting to know if this swap of both the H23 block & transmission will work on my 97 prelude H22 with no big hurdles to overcome, and if it WILL, how would it affect my performance level noticibly from what it is now with the stock H22 block and trans?

No major hurdles, but that's relative. There are parts like removing oil control plug, using different belts, water pump, etc etc etc that need to be accounted for. All said parts will be from the H22 or H23, but you need to realize that this isn't a matter of just putting an H22 head on an H23 block and going. There's more to it than that. Read the H23vtec thread in the faq section; it's explicitly spelled out there.

There won't be any physical issues with an H23vtec combination in the chassis. H22 and H23 blocks are identical minus the squirters. H23 and H22 trans' are interchangeable.

Thank You.
I do understand the work involved, and I am having a shop do the work on it. I just wanted to ask before running into a serious issue that could've been prevented by asking first.

I do have 2 questions that seem to be debated enough that I would like to ask and get your opinion about.

I've read that changing your redline is in order after swapping blocks because the H23 crank and rods aren't meant for high rpms.

1. Should I have my redline set down to around 7k after the swap? Install the squirters from my H22 and leave the redline alone? Or will it be fine at high rpm's without the squirters?
It has been debated, and it seems it might affect performance and longevity if I go wrong, so I definitely wanted to ask your opinion on it.

Displacement, Compression, etc;

2. How does a swap like this affect the car's performance? Is there even enough difference in the H23 block & trans to make any noticeable difference in performance on what was once all H22?

Thanks.
