I personally have never heard of this swap... most of the time people convert from the power steering rack in the civic to a non power steering rack...

If your going to go with a PS rack, go for the ITR if you can. It will take less turns of the wheel to go lock to lock. A teg rack is better than a manual rack. If your car is manual than you can't use PS pump. I think you just need the rack though, but don't quote me. I'd go for it

GSR / ITR racks are the same. should fit. need to modify one hole on the bracket (just elongate it a little). 4 bolts on the rack, 2 bolts for the tie rod ends. nothing too hard other than gaining access.

My car is an EX w/ p/s.I am swapping in a GSR motor including the p/s pump.My car has 200K on it so I was wanting to replace the rack. The one I have access to only has 50K on it.Will my p/s lines fit directly into the GSR rack or do I need all the lines? thanks

I do know for a fact that the ITR rack is different than the regular Integra. I used to inventory cars at IAS here in NC and on the sheet breakdown for an Integra the Type R rack was different. Had a different interchange # also... Hope this helps and I would get an ITR if I were going to go with the changeover...

To honest I don't think you can make a power steering rack a non-power steering rack without any substantial loss. What I mean by that is the power rack is made for a power assist and you are not going to be able to provide that power assist with your hands. You will be the power to the steering. I would not do that!!! What you need to do is call a junk yard and get a power steering conversion off a 92-95 civic. You will need the rack, power steering pump, lines, resevoir, lines, power steering cooler, and the pressure switch with wiring. You may be able to get by without the switch I am not sure. When I worked at IAS I pulled these all the time. They are not that bad to do......

Yes you can. I know becuase I'm running a GSR rack without power steering now. BTW, a GSR rack is a direct bolt-in on an EG.

The key is to leave fluid in the rack and fabricate a hose to run from the inlet opening to the outlet opening on the rack. This allows the fluid to travel back and forth as you turn the wheel. I'm happy with mine.

Do not:
- simply disconnect a power steering pump belt
- run a ps rack without fluid in it
- cap the ends of the inlet and outlet (instead of looping them together).

Running a dry rack will cause it to wear out very quickly. Doing either of the other two will require huge amounts of force to turn the wheel.

BTW, I changed parts because my swap was a "dropout" including the subframe, steering rack, everything. I'm not sure I'd spend money to do it if I didn't already have the rack. Also, if the engine wasn't out of the car, I probably wouldn't do it either. Then again, I'm pretty lazy and like driving better than wrenching.

Do you have your steering rack vented in any way? There was a post about this in the ITR forum, about duplicating the way the RealTime ITR's are set up. It was said that if you loop the inlet and outlets, as well as vent the system, it will keep the pressure from building up and is almost as easy to steer as having power steering, but of course with the added feedback and power gains from not having P/S. I would like to try it on my car but I think it would be pretty difficult w/ the engine still in the car.

I guess i will have to try that...but now the question will be whether to use a USDM ITR rack or just a GSR one...I would prefer the ITR..I guess I will have to try it and find out..eventually.

No, I don't have mine vented. I hadn't heard of the need and it never crossed my mind.

He is correct. The ITR and GRS racks are exactly the same (16 to 1). Its a direct bolt in for the civic. One of the civic PS fluid pipes won't be needed and the fluid reservoir needs to be swapped for a GSR type.
