Default Howdy - Am new - hoping some experts can help!

Hi folks.
I am new. I have read through some of the forums and it appears there are some pretty knowledgeable peeps around here.

A quick history... My wife bought me a 97 base Lude - last year.. The problem was that there was so many probs with it, that we werent able to absorb all of the repair costs. SO, my mom bought it from us and fixed the majority of the probs including rebuilding auto trans, etc.

Well, I am buying it back and one issue that still remains is a damn oil leak. I climbed under and it appears to be coming from back - upper half of the engine under the throttle body.

It looks like right where the head meets the block. This is what I fear.

I have experience doing suspension, and tons of other mechanical repairs, yet I am a novice with deep engine repair. I am worried that the head gasket may need replacement.

I am confident that I could do this on my own, however, I need to know what too look for. Also, it oil is leaking from this area, is my assumption correct in that it is the head gasket?

If so, what does a replacement typically entail? How long should it take? What else should be done to ensure this is corrected?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

The two areas most prone to leak on these engines are the rear cylinder head seal (sometimes incorrectly referred to as a cam seal) and the engine cooler o-ring.

The rear cylinder head seal is right under the coil mount on the head. It's behind the VTEC solenoid. Inspect that area closely before you assume it's coming from the head gasket.

If you have a leak that appears to be coming from the oil filter, it's likely the oil cooler o-ring.

If you're planning to do a bit of work to your car, the best $65 you can spend is on the Honda Factory Service Manual published by Helms and available at http://www.helminc.com
